Alcoholism and What to Do About It: Four Points to Recovery!
If you know you’re an alcoholic, then it’s a good first step in admitting it! Here, I have four gentle points for you to point you on the road to recovery.
There is a lot of debate as to whether alcoholism is a disease or not. In this article I’m not going to enter that debate, rather, I’ll simply start with this assumption – your alcoholism is manageable in the short term and curable in the long term – given the right support.
1) Optional – going to AA meetings.
AA – Alcoholics Anonymous, using the 12-step approach to recovery from your alcoholism, and a number of other multiple step programs, may help you. Bear in mind though, that you will be surrounded by other recovering alcoholics, so there is always a temptation there. If left unchecked, of course, it could lead to relapse.
2) You need someone to talk to
The person you talk to – of course, should be non judgmental and able to help you. It shouldn’t be someone who will – knowingly or unknowingly – make you feel bad because of your addiction. That is likely to have the effect of worsening your addiction. My recommendation is to contact a therapist and get help. It will change your life!
3) A Therapist is Highly recommended
Following on from the previous point – there is no valid reason why you shouldn’t engage a therapist if you are affected by any sort of addiction, not just alcoholism. With your alcoholism will come depression due to the nature of the drug, and depending on the severity of your condition, you may have other mental barriers to overcome – therefore a therapist is highly recommended. They are trained professionals – they know how to listen in a way that empowers you to break free of your addiction.
4) You need Information
This article is purposely short. Its purpose is to give you a short burst of information. If you check my site for example, there are a number of more detailed articles on this matter! I recommend you read them and digest the information! They say that knowledge is power, but knowledge alone is not good enough. You need to act on the information!
