Confession of Recovering Sugar Addict

We tend to claim addictions as social disseases or even illnesses that needs medical treatment. But some possiblly worst addictions still are marching unrecognised and that’s the reason this article had to be written. Time to unmask one on them!

Confession of Recovering Sugar Addict

Could it be said that worst and most dangerous of all our addictions is addiction to carbohydrates? Alcoholism, obesity, lack of any expressive will to live a life to its full measure? Insanity, nicely covered in colorful packing, well marketed and promoted, and perfectly legal! Maybe when hearing expression “white powder” we should think sugar instead of cocaine? Let’s check it out.

What do we now of alcoholism? That it ruins lives? Correct, I guess. Destroys persons will and reduces it to a miserable degenerate? Also true. Is alcoholism a social disease? Is it imposed in the traditions of western culture? Very well might be, still it is not too comfortable to admit that most if not all of our treaties that formulates rules of today’s world were signed  – how should I put it mildly? – in the presence of alcohol. The same could be easily said of celebration of our important dates starting from the private ones and going all the way up (or maybe down) to the state holidays with everything in between.

What else on it? That alcoholism is addiction. Psychological longing that could be – and is – developed over period of time, constantly repeating same action under similar circumstances, that’s what it is in its core.

Now ask this question – addiction to what? What is the alcohol?

The answer may surprise you, because alcohol is nothing more but a sugar, the simple carbohydrate in its liquid form. It becomes toxic to our brain through the process of fermentation, but it still stays a carbohydrate, well, a little bit more calorie dense, too. I want you to note also this – the more sugary this liquid is the heavier is the drink. Have you noticed alcohol is measured in percentages or degrees? And what it shows? Concentration of this fermented carbohydrate in the water… More carbohydrate – more danger. Period.

And we did not even touch the topic of being obese, which is another form of sugar addiction. In this case it is not fermented but still no less dangerous and capable to ruin lives just as well…
