Can a person control their willpower?

The normal person never having had to deal with an addiction would think that a person can just control their willpower to never touch whatever it is they are addicted to. But this is just not the case, myself having been a drug addict and being clean for over 20 years now can atest to this myself.
The urge to use is always there, sure some days not as strong but it is still there. The feeling a person has or did have while on drugs, or whatever your addiction is. Even gambling is an addiction and to say that after x amount of years you never have the urge to gamble is a lie. It is not so much the mode of addicition that one persues, yet the feelings of satifaction or the rush one gets from the addiction that makes addiction so strong to break in the first place.
The public needs to be more aware of what a person going through an addicition and the path to recovery is truly like. Not only for the person but for any and all family that is involved. It does take a toll on a person and the loved ones left behind in its wake, but the peice can be picked up and life will go on. For anyone else dealing with the struggles of an addicition just remember there is help out there. Find you nearest AA, NA, or whatever addiciton support group you need, utilize the 12 steps and if all else fails call a friend. Just take it one day at a time, one hour at a time, or if need be one second at a time till they start to add up to days days, weeks, months and years.
