Drugs Play Havoc with Teeth
Drugs and alcohol abuse wreaks havoc on teeth and damages every part of your body.
Drugs are a horrible health hazard to everyone but especially so for teenagers. Educate your children about the damage drugs will do to their health and how it will ruin their teeth. Amphetamine users are well known for having meth mouth, severe tooth decay and erosion of gums and teeth.
The main ingredient in meth is anhydrous ammonia, (farm fertilizer), along with lithium (from batteries) lighter fluid, and other ingredients which are acidic, causing enamel erosion and tissue damage. Meth causes oral blood supply to shrink. The reduced blood supply causes tissue to break down and die. Can you imagine putting that stuff in your mouth and body?

Marijuana causes periodontal disease, cavities, and marijuana smoke acts as a carcinogen associated with malignant lesions in the mouth. Also users are subject to oral infections due to suppression of the immune system. It might be a blast to smoke marijuana with so called friends but the problems it leaves behind are anything but fun.
Alcohol users are at risk for tooth decay from sugars and acids in alcohol and the drying effect on the oral tissue. There is also risk of developing cancer in the mouth, esophagus, and throat. Alcohol users are proven to have a higher incidence of tooth decay, periodontal disease, cancer of the mouth, throat, and esophagus than non users.
Easy access to drugs and alcohol are common in all areas of the country. Both products are easy to obtain by teenagers who have no idea what they are getting into. Parents educate your children while they are in elementary school and before. The temptation will be there when they see friends using and it seems the popular thing to do. Give them the information now to withstand peer pressure.
Drugs are dangerous for all people but teenagers are developing physically and they are much more sensitive to the effect of drugs. Remember we are only covering the mouth in this article. Damage done to the body with drugs is so much worse than we are going into here.

You have a great article here. Many people think they can do the crime and never have to do the time. They need to think again. Great warning for all people young and old alike.

While NOT A DENTIST!, I have heard that Marijuana can in fact prevent cavities, by it drying out ones’ mouth – thus preventing cavities (somehow)… It seems logical to me.
All-in-all, Marijuana is not NEARLY as bad as the medical community and this article paint it to be. What about cigarettes /nicotine and ALL the harsh chemicals, really harsh chemicals, the tobacco companies are addicting us with in LEGAL cigarettes; 1) Ammonia, 2) gun powder and more….
Pound-for-pound and ORGANIC, Marijuana is the best and cheapest medicine in MODERATION – like everything else in life!

It is sad that I know about this first hand. Our son who has bipolar disorder got into drugs for a while during the period of time we did not know where he was, it was about 2 years. He rotted out all his teeth. It is sad but a least he has turned his life around.

Good one! It’s a dadgum shame farmers both here in Florida and up in Indiana and probably everywhere else have to post guards at their anhydrous amonia tanks in the field lest they be drained by dopers in the dead of night.

thank you all for reading and commenting as always I appreciate it. Drugs get to so many of our youngsters and ruins their health and their lives.
Pam, I’m so glad your son is doing all right now. Everyone has my sympathy who has gone through this.
As for the Marijuana lobby, I am all for a doctor prescribing marijuana for cancer patients and other patients who will benefit and I agree it should be on the pharmacy shelves just as other prescribed drugs.
Ken, I hadn’t thought about farmers having to hire guards to protect their fertilizer. Is that true?

This is a very informative and educational article, Ruby! I knew a little about how drugs can wreak havoc on looks, health and the teeth, but I didn’t know to what extent. Thanks for the visuals also. I could forward this article to some people who don’t even think marijuana is a real drug and get high on a regular basis. lol Thanks again!

Meth also can make you grind your teeth as a nervous habit, which isn’t good either. Didn’t know about the marijuana stuff tho, interesting!

If you’re worried about your teeth stop drinking soda, fruit juices, and stop eating all foods that have sugar added to them. They ruin your teeth and they make you fat.
Easy access to soda and sweet food is common in all areas of the country. Both products are easy to obtain by teenagers who have no idea what they are getting into.
Etc. etc.

Well-informed and extremely relevant given the number of youths who are using ice..in ever increasing numbers. It’s pretty scary what speed does to your appearance not to mention the internal damage that it does i.e. severe mental or emotional disturbances.

So much that most high school kids does not know. Most know it really isn\’t good for them, but they never realize the tooth decay, or sometimes they just don\’t come back from a \”Bad\” trip.
