Inside an Addict’s Mind
Is it a disease or is it a choice?
Writing this article is extremely hard because it is personal. I lived with a drug addict for four years I lived through the trials and tribulations the abuse and munipulating. And after the long four years of heart ache i packed my bags and left. After all you cant help someone unless they want to help themselves.
They have these support groups NA and AA the addict get cleans starts to work a twelve step program. They build a network get a sponsor and the addict starts to feel good about their self. If you didnt know within a year most of the addicts will relaspe. Know doctors say its a disease the diese of addiction, but after being clean and you know yout an addict why would you relaspe. To me its a choice you the addict make the choice yes i am going to get high or no i am not.
Once you make the choice to pick up i do believe the drug controls your mind and thinking and at that point the addict will do whatever he has to do to get their next high. The addict is no powerless and has no self control. So is it a disease or is it a choice my question remains. If these support groups worked like they say they do then why are somany addicts relasping, you are there addictics dieing at young ages leaving children behind to greive.
Personally I believe its a choice when they pick up that first drug or drink. After, that i believe the disease of addiction becomes active. Millions of dollars are being spent on rehabs because most addicts dont have insurance so who picks up the bill? What else can be done not only is money being wasted but addicts are dieing everyday. DO the twelve stepprograms really work?
