Prostate and Pomegranate
I had such a horrible scare this week…
This past week my dad was called in by his urologist because he saw something suspicious in the elevation of his PSA level. PSA is a blood test given to a male which determines if he may be having prostate problems. So off we go to the doctor expecting the worst. Well, it turns out that his PSA level went up almost a whole point in the last 6 months. The doctor wanted to share that it is not of much concern now because PSA levels can be erratic sometimes and can go back down just as easily as it went up. But he did add that this is something he wants to monitor closely. He wants to do a biopsy if the PSA levels are still elevated next time he goes for testing.
I did rush home to the Internet to see how I can help my dad bring those darn PSA levels down because he now has a follow-up PSA test in 3 months. Low and behold, I read that pomegranate juice has shown, through studies, to make a difference in lowering PSA levels. It is recommended that a person drink 8 oz. a day for general well-being. Now my dad is drinking it faithfully. He needs to stick around for a very long time so I plan on getting him 10 bottles of it to stock up his fridge!
I hope this helps someone else who may be having this type of problem.
Here’s to pomegranate for our health even if it isn’t the prostate!
