Should Smoking be Allowed in Public Places?

This is a controversial article against smoking in public areas.

Definitely Not!

That may sound harsh, but if one takes a look at what smoking does to others who choose not to smoke, the smoker will soon learn how selfish they are to be smoking in any public area.

It is true that some may enjoy smoking and even if it cost more money to continue the habit some would rather pay for their habit then eat food. Some like to smoke and claim to enjoy it and then later die of Cancer or Emphysema . Both are horrible sicknesses and a horrific way to die. And all for what purpose? To have a few moments of enjoyment for yourself and at the expense of others who do not smoke. How sad, because their selfish desire to smoke not only hurts their health but the health of others. And what about the smokers responsibility towards the harm he brings to others, even young children and babies?

Health magazine states: “82.4 per cent of smokers that were questioned, began smoking before they were 19 years old. Another study from this same Health magazine stated that one third of regular smokers had started smoking before they were 9 years old.” To me that is so sad. These children later in their life would have loved to quit but could not, they were already hooked. They seem to have seen their adult parents smoke and wanted to appear grown up and started to desire to emulate the tough, sophisticated world of adults around them. So for those who feel their smoking is their own business, think again, your example affects others and even your children.

May lean toward the medical personnel for guidance on smoking. These medical professionals surly would tell us if smoking is bad for us. Yet if one is to go to New York City and go past the Sloan Catering Cancer Hospital, you will see all the Nurses and Doctors outside the front of the Hospital, smoking their cancer sticks and laughing and smiling as if every thing is just fine. What are the facts? Have hospitals banned smoking. Medical World News said: ” Out of 7,200 hospitals in the United States, only 472 had made non-smoking areas, and 491 had banned cigarette sales. In fact, one hospital had reversed their decision because when they banned the cigarette sales their hospital gift shop sales declined.” Sales I guess are more important then their patients health.

Many place today have already banned smoking in public places. Many smoker don’t like that their smoking is being restricted. They feel that their freedom is being taken away from them. But like anything else smoking is an addiction. Drugs are an addiction and not allowed to be used freely. Knowing that smoking is an addiction to the nicotine in the cigarette, is it really fair or can this prohibition be justified? I personally feel that due to my research on this matter, I have to say that no one should be allowed to smoke in any public area. It is justified to ban it.

  1. Smoking isn’t good for us. I HATE it!! You people must be drunk because of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is gross, and it makes your breath smell BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD!!!

  2. Okay, you, Nania, You wanna piece of meat?
If you don’t know about it well,, just shut up!

    It is our freedom!

  3. It could harm kids

  4. smoking shouldnt be banned cause it is the smokers chose to do what they wanted.
tht is no law say “smoking has to be banned”
and it legal to smoke in places.
    dont like it
    then dont go near them

  5. you all have too much time on your hands…. i agree completely wit shut up

  6. smoking sucks. it should not be allowed

  7. My opion on this matter has strongly been devoted to having smoking be banned in public places. One big reason for this opion is financing :

*The cost of a pack of cigarettes averages around $4.50 to $5, including taxes, depending on where you live. Using the lower number, a pack-a-day smoker burns through about $31.50 per week, or $1,638 per year.

*This money could be used for important needs and the fact that the smoking companies make millions of dollars does not sit well with me. However these companies thrive because of the money they give to the government.

I hope that my arguement has buried itself into your thoughts so that you too will see that smoking should be banned in public places, if not then all of america.

  8. All arguments against smoking are equally applicable to running a motor vehicle. Motor vehicles give off far more pollutants than cigarettes, especially carbon monoxide. Have you every heard of a person deliberately committing suicide by smoking? Not possible. But sitting in a garage with closed doors and the engine running will kill you in a few minutes from CO poisoning.
If you want to be fair then you give up motor vehicles and I’ll give up smoking.
I have yet to see a serious scientific study that concludes there is a danger from secondhand tobacco smoke. If you know of one I’d be grateful if you will point me in the right direction; I want not just a vague reference but the complete results published and peer-reviewed by disinterested parties.
Some folk might fnd the smell obnoxious (I enjoy it) but I also find some perfumes and foods smell obnoxious, and also alcohol on the breath, but I don’t spend my time trying to prevent people from using them or accuse them of polluting my air.
As to quoting the Bible to support your arguments that does not wash at all. What right do you have to say what God wants? And, if we take your statement to its logical conclusion, while we’re about it such a statement is even more applicable to warring which deliverately sets out to kill and maim.
As to cost – grow your own tobacco!

  9. Ok i think that you should be allowd to smoke in public because i agree that it is our choice in what we do/

  10. yes it should be banned because everywhere i look i see a hobo going store to store, looking inside all the garbage looking for smokes im plain sick of it

  11. any old men do not believe me then this is you http://www.lemonparty.org

  12. Smoking should be allowed in all public places!!!
It is our right and choice as Americans.
If they make a law saying we can’t smoke in public places in a way they are going against our constitutional rights.

  13. smoking should not be allowed because they can get sick an die

  14. uhm its if you want a piece of me not meat
    shut up.

  15. GO naina

  16. I think that smoking should be allowed in public places. If you dont like it then go stand somewhere else, its our choice to smoke!!

  17. that is so true!! even though im 16 now!!

  18. i think that all smokers are sick. I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHY YOU DO IT.

  19. you guys are retarded…
smoking should be baned for life…
i used to smoke and now i see how harmful it is to my kids

  20. i agree with peanutbutter jelly time…thetruth isthat i like men even tho i am a boy!..

  21. you are gay zack!

  22. ha

  23. man i do think smokeing is bad but it helps the goverment with mony abd all so i think it should stay around jist for know and when we find another product that is NOT bad for you and adikting smokeing should stay around.

  24. Arguably by allowing smoking in public places it is the freedom of non-smokers that is being restricted. We choose not to smoke but by going out into a public space this choice is effectively taken away. By smoking in public the smoker is forcing everyone in the vicinity to smoke too.
Maybe it is down to the renowned English sense of reserve but why is it always the non-smoker, the one who has committed no intrusion that has to quietly get up and move when someone next to them lights up? For years now non-smokers have had to endure the unpleasant inhaling of stale cigarette smoke or coming home smelling like the inside of a dirty ash tray and for those people that have to work under these conditions, in bars or restaurants, the situation is even more exacerbated, as they have no escape.

Perhaps most significantly is the detrimental affect that passive smoking can have on anyone’s health. Passive smoking has been linked to an endless list of serious health problems ranging from bronchitis and asthma to lung cancer and heart disease and even SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). According to Cancer Research figures several hundred people each year in the UK die from lung cancer caused by passive smoking.

Quite apart from the enormous cost to the NHS, what is even more infuriating is that in the vast majority of cases, illnesses developed through passive smoking might have been avoided. International experience has shown that the best way to rapidly and successfully tackle health risks from second hand smoke is to take action on smoking in public places.

A ban would not only improve the lives of us non-smokers but would encourage those causing the problem to help themselves. Areas such as California where smoking in public places has been banned entirely suggest that smoke-free environments reduce both the number of smokers in the population at large and the number of cigarettes they get through.

Parts of America have managed to create an atmosphere where no smoking is the social norm and there seems no reason why we shouldn’t be able to achieve the same. Polls have shown that a ban would be supported by as much as 85% of the public so what’s holding us back?

Finally, many people would argue that if we ban smoking in public places where will it end and that having no smoking areas in bars and restaurants is enough. But I would just like to leave with you with an anonymous comment I found on the internet, ‘A smoking section in a bar or restaurant is like having a peeing allowed section in a public swimming pool—it spreads! Would you swim there?’.

  25. UMMM… smoking is not cool. do u douche bags realize you are increasing my risk of any cancer period by 30%, and i don’t even smoke

  26. omg can someone tell me ..

Carbon monoxide is found in _________
    Arsenic is found in ________

  27. Definitely Not!

  28. i think smoking shouldnt be banned because u can’t stop people from smoking in public and if ur a non smoker then u can walk away from it and not dob on the smokers, it’s just mean.

  29. you people who think smoking is cool are gits

  30. i think people that smoke are iiiiiiiiiikkkkkkkkkyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!They should just die!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. All you people are dumb ha ha ha ha hah ahaha ahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahah

  32. ok i understand that you guys say that its your choice to go out and smoke in public and if we do not like it then we can go somewhere else,, well we could go somewhere else but there is also people smoking there too and it harms our bodies and makes us have illnesses and sicknesses that we would never even have but because you guys smoke we do,,also if kids see you smoking then they will always think that it is ok and they just think that you guys are having fun and they will think that it is always ok to do it and then they themselves will have alot of health problems,,and yess smoking does stink very bad and it does give you bad breath. I mean it’s not like you guys dont have ANYWHERE to smoke because you do,,so it’s good to look at the situation both ways,, so you people who smoke could just smoke where you can smoke and just dont where you cant…people like to be able to breathe clean air.

  33. Well I see some people trying to say that smokers have their rights.

AHA that is the most ridiculous thing Ive ever heard. Since when smokers had rights to harm other people

The disgusting Cigarette Gas is not going to avoid the Non-Smokers.

    Get Lost smokers

  34. Well I see some people trying to say that smokers have their rights. AHA that is the most ridiculous thing Ive ever heard. Since when smokers had rights to harm other people. The disgusting Cigarette Gas is not going to avoid the Non-Smokers. Get Lost smokers

  35. LOL get fucked ,
    fuck smokes,
    smoke weed everyday!!!! ;)

  36. if you dont like the smoke then just walk away rom it u cant just go around banning everything you dont like

  37. i do not think smoking should be banned and i am 17 years old. i believe this becuase i have worked in a restraunt for threee and a half years and i was there when we still had smoking. we use to be really busy and also had people coming in to eat and keep the waitresses company.. not that we are a non-smoking company we dont get near as much busniess as we use to. i feel that smoking bann just made it hard for restraunts to make more money.

  38. smoking is dangerous to your health. . lung cancer is actually the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women. of those OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO CONTRACT LUNG CANCER, LESS THAN HALF OF THEM SURVIVE IN A YEAR.

  39. Watching people smoking disgusts me. It seems as though every time I go to the grocery store, gas station or a restaurant there is either a customer or an employee smoking outside the door.

Second hand smoke is very harmful to non-smokers. As a non-smoker I am very aware of people smoking around me. I know that every time I am breathing in second hand smoke, it is damaging my lungs. However, infrequent exposure to smoke will not lead to death but I have noticed an increase in people smoking and I am concerned about the amount of smoke I am exposed to. Second hand smoke affects everyone differently .

Smoking is a bad habit that young people model. The more young people are exposed to smoking the better the chance of them becoming smokers themselves, which is why young people should be discouraged from smoking. If they begin smoking when they are young, it could lead them to other addictive and harmful drugs. This is another reason I feel the need to ban smoking in all public places. ..
