Why Do We Smoke?
So many reports till date must have been published on the diseases caused by smoking. Yet there is no shortage of enthusiasm on the smokers. People still smoke. But have you ever wondered why do people smoke? What is the psychology behind smoking? Let’s have a look.
Not many researchers have ventured to know the fact why people like to smoke. So it’s difficult to know the actual reasons. I’ve gathered some data out of my curiosity to find out the reason behind it. Here are the things I’ve found very interesting.
- For Fun: What is the fun in it? Some says it gives people psychological pleasure. This is kind of freedom and self-expression. According to many smokers, smoking gives them some kind of freshness and energy. So when they get tired that means it’s the time for a cigarette. On the more serious note, smoking starts for fun when we are very young, it comes at the time of adolescence. That’s the time we leave our old habits to accept new ones. So smoking is kind of a symbol of ‘growing up’. It starts with the whims but stay with most of us for life long.
- Blowing Troubles Away: In the time of tension and trouble, cigarettes provide relief. It’s a consolation. So people say “smoking help us to let off stream”. Science says – Smoking may relieve mental depression by forcing a rhythmic expansion of the breast and thus restoring the normal pace of breathing.
- I’m Not Alone Anymore: This is a very common response you get from the smokers. A cigarette can keep away the loneliness. Those who are lonely often find a friend in cigarette.
- A Time Indicator: When waiting for something or someone people light cigarette. So burning cigarette functions like a time indicator. When we are in a hurry, and yet have to wait, a cigarette gives us something to do during that trying interval. At the time when you want to act but no able to do so and you feel the anxiety, in these case, cigarette have a psychotherapeutic effect.
- Just For The Style: Follow the stars! Many people like to light a cigarette just to look stylish or macho. That’s the way our heroes present themselves in the movies. So cigarette is very much part of our fashion and style. Just to look cool!
For the fact, it’s not a matter of taste. It’s a matter of satisfaction. Smoking is much of a psychological pleasure. And it’s hard to know how a burning cigarette gives that pleasure… it’s human psychology after all!

I have never felt the urge to smoke after I lost my father due to smoking related illness. It is such a dangerous habit. An informative and well written article.
