The Secret to Staying Young
There are simple ways to feel healthier and look younger well into old age. The rules are easy to follow and we can all do it.It doesn’t cost any more money, so lets go for it and boogie all the way to Merlin’s castle.
We all want to look and feel young as long as possible and research is showing us how to do it. One of the main ways is to stay involved and keep learning. We can take college courses or something as simple as quilting classes or art. It doesn’t matter what it is as long as it expands our world. We can help others. There is always a need for volunteers at hospitals, schools, nursing homes, and soup kitchens. We can help where we see help is needed. Prepare food for a shut-in or baby sit for a harried mother. We should never have time to sit and be sorry for ourselves. There is too much work to be done.
Weight gain can cause heart disease and speeds up the aging process. Even a modest gain can increase the chance of death by 15%. Todays anti aging research is focusing on calorie restriction for health into an advanced age. An anti aging diet is rich in foods that are alive, rather than packaged or prepared foods. You know the foods I’m talking about. Here are examples. All berries and fruits, all green and colored vegetables, wholegrain, nuts. Just don’t add a lot of sugar, salt, or fat. If you are a flesh eater, eat fish.

Stay active. Take the grandkids out for a day at the park. They will give you plenty of exercise and will keep you young beyond your years. Go hiking with your one and only or your friends. It’s more fun than walking alone. Gardening is good exercise and an enjoyable activity. Besides you will have your home grown vegetables as a delicious bonus. Housework is good though most of us would like to skip that one. Go dancing or hit the malls or thrift stores. If you are not normally active, sit down and make a list of a different activity to do every day. Sitting and staring at the TV is the worst thing you can do for your health, and besides it will make you look old. You have to move to keep your groove
Above all, if you are a smoker stop right now. If you drink more than a drink a day cut back.

Constant stress ages you fast. It increases the strain on blood vessels, lowers your immune system and increases your chance of getting diabetes. It can also create memory loss and brain atrophy in the long run. Learn to relax. Practice meditation and deep breathing. Try to do more things that you enjoy and avoid stressful situations when you can. Talk to your partner or a close friend about any thing that worries you and be sure to get enough sleep. Regular exercise will ensure a good nights sleep.

Married people usually live a longer healthier life so if you aren’t married seek out close friends. Keep up to date and engaged in life. Read newspapers, work puzzles, Read all the books you wanted to read but didn’t have time. Stay connected and make new friends. You might run a foot race when you are 90.

Wonderful article. You give great advice, as always, Ruby. I’m working on the sleep and exercise part, myself. Ninety is a ways off, but I spend way too much of my time in front of a computer.

My mother-in-law just returned to college at 60 years old. She is so much happier and vibrant for the experience. I do not know if it is the exposure to youth, the expansion of her mind, or just new possibilties opening up for her or what. Thank you for the great article Ruby.
