10 Essential Detoxification Herbs and Supplements

Herbs and supplements are usually an essential part of a detoxification program. They could also be taken as nutritional safeguards against possible deficiencies caused by poor nutrition. A good detoxification program should incorporate both healing herbs and supplements for better results.

The process of detoxification should be such that the body is able to cope with sudden changes it experiences as toxins are released from the body. When toxic release occurs suddenly or too quickly, it may cause fatigue and flu like symptoms, which could be uncomfortable. It is therefore advisable to consult a qualified health care practitioner for guidelines especially if you already have an existing health condition. Listed below are a combination of herbs and supplements that are essential for effective detoxification programs:

  • CALENDULA: This is a very effective blood and lymphatic cleanser. It helps the body out in poor skin conditions. Brewed as tea; 1 teaspoon full to a standard size coffee mug, it can be taken twice daily.
  • BURDOCK ROOT: This contains a good amount of chromium and therefore is effective in mercury detoxification and other heavy metal toxicity conditions. Burdock has been found to be effective in treating psoraisis.Its ability to soothe irritated kidneys and enhance urine flow makes it a wise inclusion in any detox programme.
  • DANDELION (ROOT OR LEAVES): This has been called nature’s body balancer. A natural diuretic, dandelion helps to increase urine flow by the removal of salts and water from the kidneys. It contains high levels of potassium, which makes it a better choice for diuretic medication without the usual side effect. This magnificent herb also relieves liver distress as well as any form of obstruction of the gallbladder and spleen. Dandelion roots have been used as a delicious coffee substitute with beneficial effects for diabetic and hypertensive patients.
  • MILK THISTLE: The active compound in this anti-oxidant herb is silymarin, which is good for liver repair. This herb works wonderfully well for all forms of liver disease, the liver being a primary organ for detoxification.
  • YELLOW DOCK: This promotes bile flow and often used by herbalist for the treatment of jaundice. As a detoxification herb, yellow dock is a good blood cleanser and helps in liver congestion.
  • CO  EnzymeQ.10: This is a substance needed by the body enzymes to help in energy production. It helps in the break down of toxins in the liver. Recent studies have found that COQ10 is helpful in healing the heart and dental  tissues.
  • CHLORELLA  this has the world’s highest concentration of chlorophyll, a rich source of easily assimilated nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, essential fatty acids, amino acids and protein.Because it supplies all the body’s nutritional needs, chlorella is classified as one of  nature’s superfoods.
  • PSYLIUM HUSK a good source of fiber which absorbs toxins in the bowel.Its ability to loosen old matter in the bowel and increase bulk during elimination makes it an efficient cleanser for the colon and intestines. Like all other fibers, psylium should be taken with large amounts of water on an empty stomach.
