As an important healing method in traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is useful for the treatment of many diseases. Acupuncture points (or acupoints) on the Lung Meridian are usually used for healing ailments of the chest, lung, throat, and other related regions. With your elbow slightly flexed, you can find an acupuncture point on the transverse cubital crease, on the radial side of the tendon of musculus biceps branchii. This acupuncture point is LU 5 (Chize) on the Lung Meridian.
In Chinese language, the name “chi” means ruler or the ulnar part of the arm from the wrist to the elbow, and “ze” means pond or marsh. At this point, the qi of the Lung Meridian is filled here, similar to the flowing of water into a pool, this is why the name is “ulnar pond.”
LU 5 (Chize) is a very useful acupuncture point that can be applied for a variety of diseases. The most common use of this point is for the treatment of respiratory diseases, including cough and asthma. It is also used for sore throat, afternoon fever, dry tongue, and fullness in the chest. It has good effects on stopping the bleeding of the upper part of the body, including nosebleed and hemoptysis. It can help relieve pain in the arm and elbow. In addition, it has been used to alleviate vomiting, diarrhea, infantile convulsion, and heat stroke.
For acupressure healing of cough, asthma, and sore throat, use the thumb to press this acupuncture point for seven to ten seconds, for ten times. For acupuncture treatment of the diseases mentioned above, puncture the needle at the point perpendicularly for 0.8-1.2 cun. A three-edged needle can also be used to peck the point and clear the heat.
LU 5 (Chize) is a He-Sea acupoint of the Lung Meridian. It can help clear the heat of the Lung, and remove phlegm from the Lung. In addition, it can benefit the Bladder. In a study of 258 cases of hemoptysis, researchers found that injection of vitamin K3 into the acupuncture point LU 5 (Chize) had good effects for mild or moderate hemoptysis.
Another study by Chinese researchers showed that after needling at Yin meridian points, including LU 5 (Chize) and some other points such as PC 6 (Neiguan), SP 6 (Sanyinjiao) and SP 9 (Yinlingquan), the cerebral glucose metabolism was reduced in bilateral cross region of frontal and temporal lobe, contralateral temporal lobe, cerebellum and thalamus. However, the cerebral glucose metabolism was higher in homolateral hippocampus and caudate nucleus, which may indicate the mechanisms of the acupuncture points.
