Why Drinking Water Is Important?
Your body can’t store water so it’s important to hydrate yourself throughout the day.
- Water is needed to maintain the health of every cell in the body
- It helps to flush out toxins
- It keeps the bloodstream liquid enough to flow through blood vessels
- It lubricates body temperature through sweating
- It helps eliminate the by products of the body’s metabolism
- It carries nutrients and oxygen to the body’s cells
There are many other benefits of drinking water. The point is you have to get rid of build-up toxins in your body to effectively control your PCOS.
Quality of Water
It is also very important to consider the quality of water you are about to drink. Much of our tap water is badly contaminated. Many houses still contain old lead pipes that will produce high levels of lead contamination. It is estimated that 60,000 different chemicals are floating in our water supplies. In attempts to clean this water, other chemicals are added such as aluminium and chlorine. Drinking tap water could worsen your PCOS.
The best source of water is distilled water or reverse-osmosis system. These systems can be fitted to the main water system at home. Once you have the system installed, drink as much as clean water you can.
Caffeinated and Alcoholic Beverages
The loss of body water through urination is greatly increased by the ingestion of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. These drinks have a diuretic effect, meaning they stimulate the kidneys to excrete more urine. Not only do we lose water, we also lose water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin C, vitamin B (thiamine) and other B complex vitamins. For every caffeinated or alcoholic beverage you drink, you need to add an additional glass of pure water.
How Much Water Do You Need?
Approximately six to eight glasses of a variety of fluids can be consumed each day. More than eight glasses may be needed for physically active people, children, people in hot or humid environments, and breastfeeding women. Less water may be needed for sedentary people, older people, people in a cold environment or people who eat a lot of high water content foods.
You may use the hydration calculator to calculate how much water you need per day.
