Facts About Common Calming Herbs

There are may herbs out there, but these two, are at the top of the list for helping you to relax, and perhaps get a better nights sleep!

            There are herbs out there that are not very common, but are quite helpful when it comes to taking care of minor ailments. Some of the common herbs like Cinnamon and cranberry are things I have written about in the past, but lets look at other herbs, that are really not so common to most people.

            Lets look at Valerian Roots and St John’s Wort, to those who do not know, herbalist call it natures Valium, because it naturally does what most sedatives can do. Valerian Root is a great aid, for those nights that you cannot sleep; also Valerian Root is know to help you relax, un-whine, ridding your self of anxiety and tension. Many people find it helpful to take before flying, if they are afraid of flying and don’t want to be heavily sedated Keep in mind though just like any sedative, you can over dose on such products; it is always wise to consult with your herbalist, or health care provider before taking Valerian Root or St. John’s Wort; as it may conflict with your current medication.

            Herbalists use it regularly as an antispasmodic remedy for muscle spasms, in addition to providing the user a calm relaxing feeling. Many will combine this root with peppermint, which can help increase the time it takes affect. Females find it very calming during different times of their menstrual cycle, taking the edge off tension, irritation and hysterical bouts of crying.

            Valerian Root is know for it very harsh odor, upon opening the jar, be prepared; the odor is not very pleasant.

            St John’s Wort is also known to be soothing to a person’s state of mind as well as their moods. Used during mild bouts of depression, it has been known to be very helpful, while having the same affective calmness, as Valerian Root. Used as directed, St. Johns Wort is also great for relieving chest congestion, and aids to clear out the obstruction of phlegm from allergy causing airborne matters.

These two herbs should never be taken together, and you should always see how they affect your ability to response to different scenarios. It is also mentioned on most pamphlets, to avoid prolong sun expose, since St. John’s Wort make you more sensitive to the sunlight.

            Herbs are great and have many medical benefits, always check and understand the properties of each herb and how they interact with each other and with your prescribed medications, if in doubt speak with an herbalist or your health care provider.
