Foods that are healthy to heart : Health benefits of mate de coca tea

Mate Coca is the most powerful tea of all world. It is unique to Peruvian culture.

During my research on herbs, I’ve gathered many useful information about herbs and importance of some herb kinds for some cultures and subcultures. Mate coca is one of these. Until March 20, I had no knowledge on Mate Coca tea and it’s benefits. I came across the information about Mate Coca while I was researching on benefits of green tea. Without delay, I would like to start my essay about Mate Coca.

Mate coca, or with it’s common name Coca tea, is made from the leaves of Coca plant. The natural habitat of Coca plant is the Andes Mountains, especially Peru. This very beneficial tea has been drunk by Peruvian people who has been living in Andes Mountains for more than 4000 years. It had a great importance in ancient Peruvian cultures and subcultures. Coca tea was used for medicinal and religious purposes by some ancient tribes living in Peru. Some common names of Coca in these ancient tribes’ languages are Epadu, Hayo, Ypadu and Spadic. Besides Peru, it is cultivated in Venezuela, Boliva, Brazil and Colombia. It was also used for magical purposes by Shamans.

The scientific name of Mate Coca is Erythroxylum Coca. It grows to a height of 4 to 6 meters. The leaves are green or greenish brown. They are usually glossy, smooth, opaque and elliptical. The roots of Mate Coca can penetrate 3 or 4 meters into soil since this plant is very hardy. The leaves contain starch, protein, dextrin, volatile oils, fibre and some kind of sugars.

It is mainly used to increase the physical energy level of the body. Due to this, it is mostly used to struggle against pain, thirst and hunger. It is used rampantly by miners and farmers. Several benefits of Mate Coca can be listed as:

  • It is used in the treatment of some burns and skin diseases.
  • It is used in the treatment of vertigo since it increases the absorption of oxygen in blood.
  • It is used to relieve the pain, particularly headaches.

  22. Do you know how can you buy it from UK.I would like to try it.Sounds really good.Any online shops or shops in UK.Thanks very much in advance.

  23. You can buy coca tea worldwide at , and Those are the “ONLY” safe places where you can buy coca tea because they ship from USA instead of South America. All products meet American Standards and by law they have to be a certified FDA facility ( I bet they don’t even know what that means in South America )
    This is from Wikipedia :

“More recently, coca has been reintroduced to the U.S. as a flavoring agent in the herbal liqueur Agwa. Coca tea and coca flour are available in the U.S. through and Mysterious Bolivia distributed by Reyes Avila, LLC trade company headquarted in Charlotte, NC”

The only legal distributor in America is and the previous web pages are part of their distribution chain. I do not advice buying directly from Peru or Bolivia, not only you will experience customs’ problems but, the products may not meet International Standards. In South America pesticides and chemical are very cheap because generally they are illegal in the US and Europe and some coca leaf may had been contaminated with the poisons they use to eliminate illegal coca crops.

It is better to get the organic or organic certified coca tea that way you do not risk your health with external agents as poison, pesticides and chemicals.

I like the Matcha Style coca tea or powdered coca tea, it is stronger! you just brew it same as coffee

Giving it a go this week, just two more days to go before I take the second reading. Have felt really good on it, also took it when in the highlands to help combat altitude sickness.

If you have a job that drug tests…this tea will make you test positive for cocaine….happened in the Navy.

  38. now we know why the goverments are made these kind of medicens illegal.

  39. I have just finished reading Ancient Americans by Charles C. Mann, and was inspired by the fact that Peru may well contain the remains of the worlds oldest cities. Recent findings may well require rewriting of world history, and perhaps the definition of civilization itself. I strongly recommend this book. As for coca tea recent studies show many beneficial effects of Coca. The ancient cultures knew thousands of years ago.

  40. All Coca teas are not equal. The Delisse brands are “DE”cocanized, so beware. Its useless for its energizing effects. If you want this tea, get it with 100% alkaloaids, it has not be decocanized.

  41. Anne: what are the brands that are unprocessed? I’m drinking a lot of Delisse, but it would be nice to have a more enrgizing alternative.
Can you please also reply to

    Muchos gracias

  43. Yes it can cause failed drug tests if your drinking it pretty daily so do watch out for that.

As far as being worried about it being anything like cocaine..umm no:) I did a fair share of both cocaine and coca tea in my life..
same plant..way different cocaine is made with amonia (sp) and gasoline and is a heck of alot stronger then this tea.

the tea isnt even as strong as coffee..really isnt..
but just seems to give you a good vibe when drinking and I did find that over time it did help with weight wasnt a overnight cure but it did eventually seem to give a extra bit of help..

it is amazing for altitudes though..for sure!

as far as drinking with alcohol..
back in the day when I was younger we used to take a BUNCH of coca tea bags and put them in rum, let them sit for a long time and make lil drinks..
I dont think this really more dangerous then the famous redbulls and vodka that the younger crowd got hooked on..infact I am pretty sure caffiene and alcohol is probabbly way more dangerous..

for the adults who like a light peppy buzz with their alcohol I find the tea is a nice lil treat to add to drinks, to really get the most affect you really gotta squish the tea bags in the liqour of choice though, and it dont taste good with wine..strangely enough we liked it best with corona beer..
    but rum works too.
and I really did prefer it to caffiene and alcohol mixed drinks..

but if you tend to overdo things then’s the same as anything..moderation:)

as far as where to buy them, amazon probably is the best although I use a lil peru shop off ecrater and the teas come boxed just like they would if you bought them in peru and I really dont think they are like damaged or anything but then again I dont have a lab in my living room to check for pesticides
    sooo yah:)

use common sense and it will be fine but yes coca tea is for sure a lovely lil treat of nature:)

  44. I’ve never heard of this. Will have to check it out!

  47. I have suffered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for 6 years. I bought some Mate de Coca Tea because I was going on vacation in the mountains but now I drink a cup every day. It really does give me energy to make it through the day without the jitters from coffee or ginsing. It just makes you feel healthy.

  48. The Disease of 21th Century: Vitiligo

  49. Mate tea is uniquely flavorful infusion, and contains a stimulant other than caffeine that reacts differently in the body from other stimulants. Often referred to as the “diet” tea, this tea can act as an appetite suppressant and is made from a wild shrub in Argentina called yerba mate.

  50. Many people have reported better performance or less altitude sickness when using Ginkgo Biloba. In Ecuador we drank “mate de coca” (tea of coca leaves) before going to 20,600 feet on Chimborazo. Coca leaves are nothing like the cocaine they are processed into, and have been used for centuries to help people function better at high altitude.

  51. It is not by chance that the plant has acquired a broad and diverse range of applications in the traditional medicine of the indigenous people. Its irreplaceable qualities have been demonstrated over time and throughout a vast territory. The coca leaf has established itself as the traditional remedy for treating physiological and psychological illness, and by virtue of its composition it is a powerful energy restorer for curing stomach and digestive ailments, alleviating affections of the larynx and vocal chords, preventing vertigo, regulating arterial pressure and the metabolism of carbohydrates, and even of improving sexual prowess. In his journal of 1794, Hipolito Unanue writes of “coqueros, 80 years of age and over, and yet capable of such prowess as young men in the prime of life would be proud of.”

  52. Yerba mate is a highly caffeinated tea that seems like the type of thing that would be popular in parts of South America or maybe Nepal. Guayaki is marketing it here as a tea-slash-energy drink. It is rich in polyphenols such as caffeine, caffeic acid, catechin, epicatechin gallate and quercetin. These polyphenols have antioxidant activity, the ability to scavenge oxidative stress causing free radicals. It can be used for weight loss, physical and mental fatigue, nervous depression, rheumatic pains and psychogenic and fatigue related headaches. In Germany it has become popular as a weight-loss aid and appetite suppressant. It is a South American shrub, which is cultivated so that its tender shoots and leaves can be harvested.

The dried shoots and leaves are used to create a beverage called mate, which is one of the most popular beverages in South America. It is an evergreen tree that reaches a height of 60 to 90 feet, although the cultivated versions are kept at 12 to 18 feet. This finicky shrub grows only in locations with iron-rich, acidic soil and a semi tropical climate with at least 57 inches of rain per year. It is a member of the holly family, evident by its leathery leaves. It grows wild in the rainforests of Paraguay (where it is cultivated). Yerba mate is generating a buzz in Hollywood. Alicia Silverstone swears by the organic version to help give her healthy energy to get through long days of filming on the set. It is a drink native to South America, considered similar to green tea in both composition and taste. Although it is not a typical tea, it is called a tea for its similarities to other drinks and due to the fact that it also contains nutrients and chemicals associated with very few side effects.

This herb is not recommended for use during pregnancy. Consult your doctor before using this product. It is enjoyed by people throughout South America and it’s a very social activity. Take a sip from the bombilla and pass it on to your companions; it’s much more social and pleasant to share it with your friends, unless you’re germaphobic. Yerba Mate is reputed to induce mental clarity, sustain energy levels, improve mood and increase libido. It is known as the national drink of these countries and is consumed by millions of South Americans as a healthful alternative to coffee . This stimulating herbal beverage has the unique ability to wake up the mind without the nervousness and jitters associated with coffee. The mate is traditionally prepared in a gourd, filtered through a bombilla and enjoyed in a communal ritual passing the gourd from one person to the next.

  53. Do you know where you can buy from the real coca tea, not decocanised one, here in uk.I think will be more nergising, if you know any websites and brands, please let me know.Thank you

  54. Kolu :
    GO to

  55. I am drinking Yerba Mate Tea and not for the flavor. :) This plant from South America is touted to alleviate fatigue, suppress the appetite, stimulate the body, rev up the metabolism, lift the mood, improve sleeping patterns, cleanse the blood, provide antioxidant benefits, and is thermogenic which encourages the body to burn more calories. So I am replacing my morning cup of java with this strong tasting tea. The girls at work & I call it my stinky tea.

  56. Hi
I would be interested in knowing how to find the unprocessed brands in the UK/delivered to the UK?

    Many thanks

  57. I’d rather drink hay tea than yerba mate…yuck!

  58. Hello, I usually order my coca tea from
a really nice site with also interesting products. You should check it out ;)

  60. Interesting.

  61. One day i surf internet found some good online shopping website :
Clothes Jeans. It’s a good website. Otherwise I found other websites, such as designer sunglasses ,Ed Hardy ,Cheap shoes online , chaussures pas che, NFL Jerseys,Nike Sport Shoes Shop, Chaussures Sport, MBT Shoes, cheap cell phones, cheap cell phones .All of them are high-credit can go to look !trust me!!!!!!

  62. Just want to know if anyone has tried the Inka Coca leaves brand because I recently ordered 300grams and am awaiting shipment. Now that I read more which I should have done first….. I’m worried I might have bought the decocainized crap and I ordered it from
    Help anyone??

  63. Not sure how the U.S. sold stuff is “decocanized” but it definitely is not useless. I am a skeptic and have been experimeting w/it, and it offers a very unique feeling. Not sure how it works but it does do something gently pleasant.

  64. So True, This is just what most governments hide from us, the tried and true remedies that God placed on this earth. The coca planted right were there they are needed and to be used by people all around the world for healthy benefits. Cocaine is not the issue,-that’s man made. I sip, the tea daily now, at work around 4pm to get the boost of energy I need instead of that chocolate, sweet craze. This is the real deal and I am sure there are other plants we have not tried yet the do even more to cure diabetes, cancer, etc….. Hopefully it won’t be marketed and sold for money for the rich only.

  65. I would strongly suggest that if one is seriously interested in reaping the benefits of coca leaf tea, Amazon is not the best place in the US to purchase high quality organic coca. Check out Their organic coca leaves grown in Peru carry the official seal of Andina Real and cost one third the price of any of Amazon’s supplier. Shipping costs a nominal $5 anywhere within the continental US. Each bag is hermetically sealed in pliable foil pouches that retain the freshness of the leaves with that just picked & dried aroma. You will not be disappointed.

  66. coca is not cocaine,do your research.coca is found natural in the leaf at a alkaloid content of .00 to .09 percent,in its natural form, whilest cocaine chlorahydrate has 42 different ingredents w/ a alkaloid content of 99.00 percent after chemical manipulation by man and about 500 pounds of leaves for 1 gram of cocain chlorahydrate,I suppose you think a ear of corn is whiskey,or a hotdog bunn with poppy seeds is herion, right??mw

  67. like THE ARTICLE, great post
