Helpful Herbs for Glaucoma
Nathan Pritikin says that the cause of glaucoma is atherosclerotic plaque buildup within the eye, caused by eating too much saturated fat.
- Jaborandi comes from a tropical tree in South America. It has been used for treating glaucoma for hundreds of years. The active ingredient is pilocarpine, which reduces intraocular pressure.

- Oregano is one of the richest herbs in antioxidants. 1-2 teaspoons dried oregano in a cup of boiling water can lower intraocular pressure.

- Kaffir potato contains forskolin, which lowers eye pressure. Taken in drops, it lowers eye pressure in just 1 hour, reaches its peak in 2 hours, and continues for 5 hours.

- Pansy flowers contain rutin, which lowers pressure.

- Warm fennel herb, alternated with chamomile and eyebright, is helpful. Apply as eyewash in an eyecup or three drops to each eye, 3 times a day.
- A Chinese herbal formula for glaucoma: Mix 1 oz. each of tinctures of bilberry, dandelion, coleus, eyebright, milk thistle, and ginkgo in a large bottle. Take 1 teaspoon 2 times daily for 3-6 months.

- Research studies found that the root of coleus forskohlii contains forskolin, which reduces intraocular pressure. Salvia mitiorrhiza root also does this. Both are Chinese herbs.

I love this. Only, you have not said whether oregano, kaffir potato, pansy etc are to be used internally or externally.

I liked the Fennel herb. Its leaves and dry seed are even good to reduce blood sugar levels in diabetic patients.
Leaves can be cooked along with the other vegetables as a special healthy dish.

I wish I had known about these remedies before. My glaucoma is too advanced now, but at least it is being kept under control. A really helpful piece.

I have no idea there was such a thing as glaucoma. In fact, I am never knowledgeable on anything concerning the human body. Quite certain that I once believed that I peed through my nose. You’ve certainly done a good job addressing this issue of glaucoma.

Just like Christine, I wished I would haveknown this earlier, too. But it will still come in handy some day. It’s good to know that oregano is as effective as the others. Oregano can be easily found in the Philippines and I can’t help but notice that most elder Filipinos are afflicted with glaucoma.

Unfortunately glaucoma is not as simple as a build up of saturated fats. Apparently my eye shape is the major factor. Glaucoma is often hereditary. Interested to read the herbal remedies here. In his more wayward youth my son informed me marijuana is the best remedy for eye pressure. I looked it up and he is right

I read about herbs daily and have not heard of a few of these, but do take some of those you mentioned daily…jaborandi and Kaffir?
Bilberry is very good and has been used for hundreds of years or longer as well as some of the other herbs you mention.
Giftarist, nicely written, informative and colorful with beautiful illustrations.
