Herbal Medicine

About natural medicine and how it has helped man.

Before modern medicine, Man had plants to help with the many diseases that modern Man simply takes a pill or shot to cure.  The people of long ago had many different herbs to turn to.  They took Willow bark for headaches, Feverfew for fevers and migraines, they used herbs to heal wounds and stop bleeding.  Willow was taken by simply boiling the inner bark in water and perhaps sweetening the tea with honey before drinking.  Feverfew was taken in the same manner.  Poultices (a mass of wet herbs) was applied to wounds to help them to heal.  The herbs were: Comfrey, spiderwebs, (while not an herb, it kept bacteria out of wounds because of an antibiotic in the fiber) it was used as a bandage, lamb’s Ears, Marshmallow and Dittany.  These were all used either as poultices, compresses (a cloth soaked in a tea of the herb) or salves.

Ancient Man knew what to do for diseases and the art has not been lost.  The art of herbal healing has been increasing over the past years.  I hope that herbalists, one day, gain back the trust and respect they once had.
