Herbs for Chest Infections

Different herbs that can help with the symptoms of chest infections.

Chest infections are created by viral infections that create your airways to become blocked with mucous and toxins. Within the mucous lies bacteria, this is what causes us to become ill. With the use of herbs, you can help to reduce the painful symptoms of chest infections and can also help you to recover quickly.

Herbs that are known to prevent viral infections include, thyme, which is an anti – microbial herb or hyssop and coltsfoot, which are herbs that act as a decongestant.

Herbs to treat chest infections:

  • Thyme – contains anti – microbial agents to help fight off viral infections. An infusion can be made by brewing the leaves or syrup can be prepared to take with honey.
  • Liquorice – Liquorice contains many anti – inflammatory agents and is also high in nutrients. Liquorice can be bought in powdered form and used as a tincture or eating the candy form of liquorice is just as beneficial.
  • Coltsfoot – coltsfoot has been used to treat chest infections and colds for generations. Coltsfoot has anti – inflammatory agents and calms the symptoms associated with viral infections
  • Elecampane – elecampane fights the bacteria that produces mucous and has been known to relieve the bronchial tubes. Elecampane is a gentle herb that can be used for all ages, including children.
  • Maidenhair Fern – Maidenhair fern is classified as an expectorant and has been known to relieve the symptoms of persistent coughs, colds, sore throats and asthma

Infusions, chest rubs or balms can also be made out of the mentioned herbs to help fight infection.

  1. Thought the article was rather informative and healthful, seeing as I currently have a chest cold. But I was a bit dissappointed, it doesn’t mention where we could get any of these herbs. Some are a bit exotic to say the least at least in my neck of the woods. I’ve never come actoss Coltsfoot or hyssop for instance.
