Herbs
Many people take herbs to boost their immune system or treat allergies or colds. Are they safe or effective?
An herb is a plant used for its flavor, scent or medicinal uses. It can be used alone or in mixes.
People have used herbs since ancient times; lavender, aloe vera, ginger, and hoodia just to mention a few. Herbs are important in many different cultures and countries. While millions of people use herbs, much still remains to be learned of their effectiveness and safety. Just because the herbs are natural medicines does not make them safe. Herbs can react to prescription drugs, increasing or decreasing their effectiveness. Herbs can also react to your body.
If you are thinking about using herbs as a supplement, here are some things to think about:
- Metal, unlabeled drugs and other substances have been found in herbal supplements.
- Ask a professional who is trained in herbal medicines for guidance.
- Some herbs can interact negatively with both prescription and over-the-counter meds.
- Not all the ingredients may be listed on the bottle.
- Women who are pregnant or nursing should be very careful.
- Use caution in giving children herbs.
Research the herbs and supplements before taking them. Ask you doctor before taking any herbs, especially if you are on a long term medication.
