How to Give Yourself a Neck Massage at Work
If you’re prone to neck stiffness or stress at work, a quick neck massage can make you feel more comfortable. Here’s how to do one quickly and easily.
Do you suffer from frequent neck stiffness? If you work in an office environment where you sit at a desk and type, this can be a nagging problem that can decrease your productivity. The good news is you can give yourself a neck massage while sitting at your office. Not only will a neck massage reduce the incidence of neck pain and stiffness, it’s also a great stress reliever. Here’s how to give yourself a quick, but effective, neck massage:
-
Locate The Junction of Your Skull and Spinal Cord
Using the fingers of your right hand, locate by touch the ridge where your skull and spinal cord meet. Once you locate this ridge, apply pressure with your second and third fingers and move them in small circular motions across the ridge. Sustain pressure with each movement for around four seconds. Continue performing this movement for several minutes.
-
Move Further Down The Neck
Continue moving down the spinal column applying circular pressure motion until you reach the junction where your spinal column meets your shoulders. You should feel a prominent bony prominence when you’re in the right area. Concentrate on applying circular pressure motions to this bony prominence for several minutes.
-
Massage The Neck Muscles
Using your right hand, grasp the neck muscles on the left side of your spine and knead them for two minutes. Repeat on the other side using your right hand. Once you have completed the massaging motion, grab the neck muscles on either side of the spinal column and squeeze them, holding pressure for forty seconds. Do this on both sides.
-
Apply Pressure Movements to The Neck Muscles
Using the circular pressure movements you performed in the first two steps, apply circular fingertip pressure to the neck muscles starting at the base of the neck and working up to the skull. Do this on both sides.
-
Do Gentle Range of Motions Movements
To further relax the muscles, end your neck massage by doing gentle range of motion exercises by tilting your heat to your shoulder on both sides repeatedly and then tilting your chin forward and backwards. Perform these exercises slowly. Avoid rapid jerking motions.
By now, your neck stiffness should have subsided and you should feel much more relaxed. Try performing these movements on a daily basis as you’re working at your desk. By learning to give yourself a neck massage, you’ll be more likely to leave the office refreshed and rejuvenated at day’s end.
