Meditation for Beginners
Basic meditation technique for beating stress.
What does your latest medical test have to say about your health? Cholesterol, stress, heart problems? In today’s competitive world, it would be a miracle if you escape these maladies. Pressure to perform, problems in relationships, fear of failure; all these give rise to stress which in turn results in loss of sleep further paving the way for acidity, ulcers and ultimately a weak heart and clogged arteries.
The immediate solution is to pop a few pills and feel better for the moment. But there is a flipside to this too. More the pills popped more the chances of getting a some other problem. So is there a way out? Is alcohol and tobacco the answer then? Definitely not. The answer lies in the ancient technique of meditation. Meditation is not only for monks and Rishis trying to please the gods for boons but very much for the ordinary folks as well.
Follow the steps below for complete peace of mind:
1. The Location:
Find a peaceful location where there is no disturbance. It could be your bedroom or the neighbourhood park.
2. The Time:
Meditation can be practiced during any time of the day. But the preferred time is during sunrise.
3. The Posture:
Sit in a comfortable position. Note that you should keep the back straight. A preferred position is called “Padmasan” or the lotus position. Fold one leg and keep the sole over the thigh of the other leg. Now fold the other leg to keep the sole of this leg over the thigh of the other leg. If you are uncomfortable you may try out the “Ardha Padmasana” or the half-lotus position. Fold one leg and place the sole over the thigh of the other leg. Now fold the other leg and place it under the thigh of the other.
Touch the index finger with the tip of the thumb and stretch out the other fingers. This way all the negative energy flows out of the body through the outstretched fingers.
Close your eyes.
4. The technique:
1. Concentrate on a virtual point between your eyes.
2. Breathe in slowly through the nose and exhale at the same speed but thru the mouth with the word “Aum”.
3. Repeat the procedure for 10 to 15 minutes.
5. The Results:
1. A calm mind.
2. Better ability to handle stress
3. improved decision taking ability
4. Happiness
Do not expect to see results the same day. Results might take weeks. It is important not to lose faith and give up. Contrary to popular belief, meditation is easy to learn and easier to practice. 15 minutes a day can guarantee complete peace of mind and a more fulfilling life.
