The Healing Power of Alternative Medicine &Ndash; Tulsi – a Wonder Herb

Ocimum Sanctum , more commonly known as Tulsi or Holy Basil is found in most Indian homes more than any other plant, due to the spiritual significance attached to it. It is linked to both religious practices and a healthy living, a must in the courtyard of every Indian home. This wonder herb is associated with so many therapeutic properties since ages in India.

A review of its ancient literature reveals the use of Ocimum Sanctum in respiratory disorders. It is a simple home remedy for coughs, colds and fever. There are two classifications of this tulsi plant, called the Krishna tulsi which is dark colored and the Shyam or Vishnu tulsi which is light colored. In ancient Ayurveda, the use of Krishna tulsi has been observed for therapeutic purposes. In order to prevent cold and coughs, five leaves of this plant should be taken everyday after carefully washing it. These tulsi leaves when used along with neem leaves and black pepper, in the form of a decoction have been reported to prevent and treat fevers including malarial infection. Ayurvedic physicians claim prevention of the dreaded Swine Flu virus and enhancing immunity levels with the consumption of this decoction on a daily basis for 40 days. It is believed that having a few tulsi leaves boiled in water every morning exerts an anti-stress effect on our body. It is undoubtedly the most effective remedy for treating a persistent cough along with honey. It has been widely used by Ayurvedic physicians in the treatment of respiratory problems and asthma. In India, after lot of clinical research for the efficacy of tulsi in enhancing well being and diminishing stress, it is being prescribed in many tonics. It is imperative for us to understand and make use of this simple home remedy of taking five tulsi leaves a day to raise the quality of our life and manifold health benefits arising out of its prolonged usage.
