The Seven Wonder Herbs
The seven (7) super spices are packed with anti-oxidants which help protect our cells from damaged caused by our harmful environment and our body’s free radicals.

Aside from adding flavor to our food, herbs and spices have a variety of medicinal uses. Herbs have long been used as the basis of traditional Chinese herbal medicine, with usage dating as far back as the first century. Ancient Egyptian medicine (1000 B.C.) is also known to have used garlic, coriander, mint, indigo, opium, castor oil, and other herbs for medicine.
Modern studies have already proven that most herbs and spices are packed with anti-oxidants which help protect our cells from damaged caused by our harmful environment and our body’s free radicals. Some herbs are known to help curb hunger and also boost metabolism that aid in weight management.
McCormick, the global market leader in herbs and spices took advantage of these health benefits and identified “seven super spices” not only to boost the image of their products but also to promote health consciousness in every household.
The seven super spices, together with their health benefits are listed below:
- Ginger. It contains the same amount of oxidants as a cup of spinach. It has gingerol – known as a natural remedy for indigestion, arthritis, migraine, nausea and is associated with relieving body pain and inflammation.
- Rosemary. In the 14th century, it was believed that this herb was used by Queen Elizabeth of Hungary as medicine for her rheumatism. This herb is commonly found in the Mediterranean Region and is packed with flavor and antioxidants.
- Cinnamon. Aside from apple pies and other sweet dishes, cinnamon is a good remedy for joints and muscle pain because it has anti-inflammatory qualities. It is rich in natural compound called polyphenols which function like insulin which helps regulate blood sugar.
- Oregano. A teaspoon of oregano is equivalent to three ounces of almonds and one-half cup of chopped asparagus. It also has one of the highest antioxidant levels among other spices. It contains rosmaric acid which is known to help fight bacteria and parasites.
- Thyme. It contains flavonoids, an anti-aging agent and a good supplement for the heart. One teaspoon of thyme has the same amount of antioxidants found in carrots and tomatoes.
- Yellow Curry. It contains turmeric, a concentrated source of antioxidants. Turmeric is known to help prevent cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Red Peppers. Cayenne or ground red pepper has the highest concentration of capsaicin. Capsaicin is a rich source of antioxidants. It helps increase our metabolism which usually results to faster weight loss.
