The health benefit of basil seed.
Basil is an aromatic, low growing herb leaves of which have a bright green to purple ovate colour, and is grown in warm, tropical climate. Basil is commonly used in Asian dish but is also very present in Italian food.
There are different varieties of basil and they are known as sabza, subza, takmaria, tukmaria, falooda, selasih.
The one on which I will be focussing is the seed itself precisely the one called “tukmaria for its health benefit rather than the whole plant. The tukmaria seed is black in colour and slightly smaller than a grain of rice. It’s available in small packs of 100grams in Asian market and cost approximately €2.00 per pack.
Basil seed or tukmaria has been introduced in my country of birth which is Mauritius by Indian immigrants and has since become part of the Mauritian traditional treatment for constipation, indigestion and heartburn. I remember my mum always gave me a glass of tukmaria drink whenever I had an indigestion or a bloated feeling resulting from bad eating. It can be taken anytime but the best is one glass of basil seed soaked in water at night before going to bed. During the night while sleeping, it works as a cleanser to remove all the toxin from the bowels and the next morning everything is flushed. All the bloated feeling disappears and you are back on tract.
Not later than 3 weeks ago I ate some Chinese food and was very sick. For few days and nights I couldn’t eat and threw up many times. I discovered that it was food poisoning. Instead of going to the doctor I had a few glasses of the Tukmaria seeds on three consecutive days (available in Asian store here in Ireland) and that was more than enough to set me back on tract. It’s not expensive and it’s a natural treatment.
The tukmaria has the same effect of antibiotics eliminating bacteria.
It helps to detoxify any toxin that might be circulating through the body via blood thereby have the property to purify blood.
HOW TO PREPARE BASIL DRINK
Basil drink is very simple to prepare. Just put a small amount (1-2 teaspoonful) of the basil seed soaked in water, after 15 to 20 minutes a kind of grey coated jelly is formed around each seed, simply add sugar to it and drink. Basil seed is tasteless.
The typical way to prepare this drink though is the falooda which is a popular Indian drink. The first step is to soak the seed in water first then you can mix rose or almond syrup and add vermicelli, milk and tapioca to it and sugar if you like it sweet.
In Mauritius we have more or less the same thing but instead of using vermicelli we use white jelly or “Agar Agar“ in Malay. We call it the “Alooda” drink in Mauritius.
The basil seed should always be soaked in water first. See picture below.
In a casserole take the white jelly which comes as a powder (available in small pack of 200grms in Asian market as well) and dissolve it in 1 full cup of cold water and cook for 4 to 8 minutes until it becomes thick. (slightly thick is fine as well). Then remove the cooked jelly from fire and leave aside to cool until you obtain a solid block of jelly grate it. Add 1teaspoonful of that grated jelly in the basil seed soaked in water, add milk and flavour according to your taste and 1scoop of ice-cream, mix the all lot with a spoon and the Alooda is ready. The recipe is not limited to those only.
You can used soaked basil seed to fresh fruit juice as well. You are free to create your own recipe drink with different ingredient. Give it a try and leave your comment after that.
