A New Procedure for Skin Rejuvenation
A common cosmetic procedure could hold the key to aging skin rejuvenation. Could this be an inexpensive way to get younger looking skin?
No one wants to look in the mirror and see wrinkles and loose, saggy skin. Although some wrinkles are an inevitable part of aging, there’s much that can be done for aging skin rejuvenation these days that doesn’t involve downtime and large outlays of cash. A procedure that’s traditionally been used for cosmetic purposes may offer longer term benefits in terms of aging skin rejuvenation. According to a new study, microdermabrasion for skin can not only make the skin look better in the short term, but may actually increase collagen production and repair its underlying structure.
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a procedure that’s carried out in many salons, medical spas, and dermatologist’s offices. It involves using a special wand to spray abrasive crystals across the surface of the skin. The abrasive sloughs off the superficial dead skin cells on the skin’s surface in a safe and gentle manner. After the procedure, the skin looks refreshed and polished, although there may be slight redness which rapidly resolves in a day or two. The procedure is completely pain free and many people find the abrasive crystals hitting their skin to be relaxing.
A Study
According to a new study published in Medscape, microdermabrasion may not only improve the skin cosmetically, but could be effective for aging skin rejuvenation. They tested microdermabrasion on a total of forty men and women over the age of fifty using either course-grit or medium-grit abrasive particles. They found that when they used the course-grit abrasive crystals, it stimulated the production of collagen precursors and other compounds associated with skin remodeling. They didn’t see the same skin remodeling effects when they used the medium-grit abrasive crystals – suggesting that greater skin irritation is needed for skin rejuvenation.
Microdermabrasion for Skin Rejuvenation: An Alternative to Laser Resurfacing?
Microdermabrasion using a courser grit could be a less costly method for skin rejuvenation if the technique can be refined. Although the study shows that course-grit microdermabrasion causes skin remodeling, it’s not clear whether this translates into younger looking skin. This is a small study and more research and fine tuning is needed before this procedure could be widely offered, but it does hold promise as a less costly alternative to laser treatment for aging skin rejuvenation. Traditionally, microdermabrasion is done once a week for four to six weeks and then once every four to six weeks after that. It’s unclear how often it would need to be done for aging skin rejuvenation.
The Bottom Line
Microdermabrasion could be a less expensive and easier method for skin rejuvenation. Hopefully, we’ll hear more about this one.
