Crown Without a Kingdom

Normally, when we refer to crown, we refer to royalty. However, I would like to share about dental crown.

Introduction

I first learned about dental crown by the dentist.  She suggested the crown to fill the gap between my teeth.  At the time, I thought there was no harm in having a crown fitted to my mouth since my tooth will still be in place.   Also, it would close the gap and reduce the chance of getting food stuck between my teeth.

Boy was I wrong.  First the procedure was pretty painful.  In order to fit the crown, some drilling had to be done to cut out part of the tooth where the crown would go.

The process

Also, it was a two trip process.  First trip was to prepare the tooth and also get the measurement – basically, they had to create a mold of your mouth.  A temporary crown will then be placed on your tooth until the permanent crown is ready.  The 2nd trip was the fitting.    More grinding and drilling will be performed to get the crown on.

Also crown is usually not supported by the dental coverage, so you had to pay the full amount yourself.

Recently, I had to get a crown again but this time it is because there was already too much fillings on the tooth and any new filling will be temporary at most.

Side Effects

One of the things the dentist never tell you are the side effects of the crown.  The following are my personal experience:

  1. The crown will actually affect your taste.  You lose some of the taste sensation in your mouth.  Somehow, the food you eat will be less tasty then before you had your crown.
  2. For the next few days or weeks, you find that your pronunciation of some worths will be off.  You end with additional “ffff” or “ssss” when you try to say some words.

Types of Crowns

There are a few different kinds of crown.

  • all ceramic (on the outside).
  • all metal (you may have seen it in one of the henchman in The Spy Who Loved me, whose name is Jaws.
  • partial ceramic and partial metal.

In fact one of the crowns I had is partially broken.  The ceramic layer is broken revealing the metal inside.  It is still usable at this time.

Closing
My recommendation is only to get the crown only when necessary.
