Homemade Facial Mask Recipes for Autumn Skin Care

Fall is prime time for removing old, dead cells and nourishing the new.

Dry skin is less of a problem in the summer because increased perspiration helps to keep the skin hydrated.  But even if your skin isn’t dry at summer’s end, there is still the problem of dead skin cell buildup.  This layer of cells gives the skin a dull, lifeless appearance.  Fall is prime time for removing old, dead cells and nourishing the new.  Start with a peeling mask, then follow up with one of the beautifying masks listed below.

APPLE SAGE MASK

Pureé an apple and mix with three tablespoons honey and one scant handful of fresh chopped sage.  Apply mask to your face and leave on for fifteen minutes.  Rinse with warm water.

TOMATO TERRIFIC

This one is good for oily skin.  Mash one ripe tomato with one tablespoon each of honey, plain yogurt, and oatmeal.  Apply (avoiding the eye area), leave on for fifteen minutes, then massage into your face before rinsing off with cool water.

ROOT DUET

Pureé one raw carrot and add to one half cup boiling distilled water.  Let steep for ten minutes, with the pot on low heat.  Strain; use the pulp as a mask and the liquid as a cleanser (or in the bath).

OIL MASK

Apply avocado, sesame or olive oil to your face after you’ve gently towel-tent-steamed for ten minutes.  The oil will penetrate the skin, leaving it very smooth.  You may remove excess oil with a cotton ball, then flush your face with cool water.

CALIFORNIA MASK

Blend together one-quarter of an avocado, one half of a ripe banana, two tablespoons plain yogurt, and one tablespoon wheat germ oil.  Leave mixture on your face for fifteen minutes.  Rinse off with warm water.
