How to Effectively Control Acne

Acne, pimples, blemishes, dry red skin, inflamed lesion and facial breakouts are most common in teenagers, but facial breakouts can also appear in the 40s, causing mood swings and feelings of discomfort. A better understanding of these skin problems is essential for the best treatment and here are a number of things you should do to help you control or keep your acne in check.

People commonly believe that acne is caused by dirt but this is untrue as it can be caused by a combination of factors including hormonal change and mood swing. In general, the facial break outs are caused by excessive sebum (an oily substance naturally produced by the skin) production. When more sebum mixes with dead skin cells it increasingly flourishes in the pores, and can result in clogged pores, which promotes the growth of bacteria and a bacteria caused condition called Propionibacterium Acnes. The result is dry, reddish skin, inflamed or irritated skin linked to pimples. The severe form of acne lesions will generally persist a couple of weeks or months, with their content harden and eventually ending up into a deep cyst leaving a permanent deep scar on one’s face.

Avoid Over-washing

There is always a misconception that acne is caused by dirt, and hence one tends to over-wash their face. Nevertheless, excessive washing and scrubbing your face doesn’t make acne go away as it will leave your healthy skin dry, making the acne-prone areas irritated. Therefore, you should limit yourself to two washes per day. Additionally, habitually washing your face may lead to excess oil production, causing more skin breakouts.

Don’t Touch Your Face

Even though a bacterium is not a main cause of breakouts it can cause acne if it gets trapped deep down in the hair follicle. When you touch your face too often with your hands, including rubbing your face or resting your chin on your hands, it can invite bacteria to enter your skin pores causing more facial breakouts.

After Exercising, Remember to Shower Off

While exercising, each movement of yours generates heat and moisture. Both heat and moisture will be trapped by your skin, preparing an ideal breeding ground for the spread of bacteria. Therefore, it is vital for you to wash off immediately after exercising to help combat facial breakouts.

Avoid Using Products that Contain Alcohol

While purchasing a toner or any facial product, search the label and make sure that it doesn’t contain high concentrations of isopropyl alcohol, or common rubbing alcohol. Due to the fact that alcohol is a strong astringent; certainly, alcohol strips the top layer of your skin, stimulating sebaceous glands to produce excessive oil. When your skin constantly produces more oil, bacteria will lurk beneath the surface of your skin within the swollen follicle waiting the right conditions to grow into an inflamed lesion. As your white blood cells try to fight against the intruders, the surrounding of your skin surface becomes increasingly inflamed. Not only will alcohol not limit skin problems, but may result of using products loaded with high concentrations of alcohol may also cause more blemishes, breakouts and possibly dry red skin.
