How to Select The Right Shampoo for Your Hair Type
The majority of people choose their favorite shampoo based on smell. Although we all love for our hair to smell good, choosing a shampoo based on smell or popularity is not a good idea.
There are many things you should keep in mind when buying shampoo. First, I did some research regarding the pH balance. What is pH balance? Also known as “potential hydrogen” and the level of acidity or alkalinity. When choosing a shampoo, select one that doesn’t contain too much alkaline. A shampoo that has too much alkaline can damage your hair and leave it feeling stiff and brittle. If you are not sure, a good shampoo is a little bit acidic with a pH balance of 4.5 to 5.5, which is mild for the skin and hair. A good shampoo has to be between 5 and 7. According to studies, Head and Shoulders has a 6.00, Dove Beautifully Clean has a 5.48 and Herbal Essence has a 6.08. Although Garnier Fructis smells incredible and is very popular, its pH balance is only 3.41, not good.
After using Pantene Shampoo and Conditioner for several years now, I decided to write an article on hair. Pantene is a very popular line of shampoo, conditioner, leave in treatments, gels and hair spray designed for thin hair, coarse and unruly hair and normal to dry hair: everything but oily hair types. When I wash my hair with Pantene shampoo, I have noticed that my hair gets a lot more oilier, which means that I end up washing it more often. And the more that I wash it, the oilier it feels. The new herbal conditioner from Pantene promises silky and soft hair, but it leaves my ends really dry. Although my hair is fine and manageable, Pantene shampoo and conditioners are not for my hair type. And here is something really odd that I found after using Pantene Shampoo. Living in the Sunshine State, I am usually at the beach every weekend during the summer. The combination of the sun and salt water can leave your hair looking and feeling dull. Shopping at the pharmacy one afternoon, I grabbed the red bottle of Pantene shampoo and conditioner. I really didn’t take the time to read the bottle since I usually buy the same type of products. After washing my hair, I noticed that my hair looked a bit wavy on the ends. I found it unusual because my hair is very fine and straight naturally and the only way that I can put a curl on it is if I use a diffuser. So I picked up the bottle of conditioner and read that the product that I had chosen was for medium to coarse and unruly hair. Definitely not for my hair type. I have stopped using Pantene ever since. And now I have started using Biol-age again. These are very expensive European products designed to strengthen the hair cuticle after it has been damaged from the sun, salt and chlorine. Usually, the summer can have a tolling effect on the hair but after a few treatments, my hair will feel like silk again.
Shampoo has various types depending on your need for your hair; such as for dandruff, volume, styling, or for frizz control. with the many different types of shampoos available. For instance, never buy a shampoo and conditioner in one unless you plan on spending several hours trying to untangle your hair. It is better to spend more money and get quality. Several years ago, I decided to buy Pert Plus because of its smell. Not only is the smell incredible but it lasts for a few days. However, after washing and blow-drying my hair, my scalp started itching. Let me do some research on Pert Plus and see why I got an allergic reaction. I just logged on to their website and the slogan for this shampoo is: Crazy good hair without the craziness. The advertisers advertise their products as gentle enough to use daily even on perm and colored treated hair. Like I said before, it depends on the hair type. I didn’t find the exact pH balance for Pert Plus, however, Pert Plus Shampoo and Conditioner for Kids – Bananaberri promises that this is the perfect shampoo for all of children’s shampooing needs. The shampoo promises a tear free cleaning plus conditioning for soft and manageable hair. They also claim to be PH balanced, which means the shampoo is gentle enough to be used daily. Last, Pert promises to leave hair “berry soft” with the scents of bananas and strawberries. And for only $2.39 a bottle. When choosing hairstyling products, you don’t want to choose something too cheap such as Alberto V05, however, you do want to buy something that is not too expensive and gives you the results you want for your hair type.
