What is Precocious puberty?
Children develop physical and emotional maturity during the adolescence to become young men and women. Puberty happens around 10 years of age for girls and 12 years of age for boys. Have we ever thought what will happen if a 5 year old girl begins to show the sing of puberty? Will it affect her or not?

The medical term for puberty occurring at unusually early age is Precocious puberty. Kids find emotionally and physically disturbed by such developments and can be the sign of underlying problems in the body. Precocious means development at an early stage.
Precocious puberty can adversely affect the social behaviour and psychological development of the kids and results in long-term health risks.

Signs of precocious puberty
Signs of precocious puberty are very similar to normal puberty and the difference is that if starts at a very early age.

In girls, the breasts start to develop along with pubic or underarm hair. A growth spurt or rapid increase in height occurs as the menstruation starts to set in (menarche). Acne can be seen to appear on the face and mature body odour is due to the secretion of oil glands in the skin.
In boys, the signs of precocious puberty includes enlargement of testicles and penis. Body hairs develop, especially in the pubic, underarms and face. Rapid growth with deepening of voice can be noted. Like normal adolescence, boys having precocious puberty develop acne on the face and sweat smells like matured.

What are the reasons that cause precocious puberty? Is there any treatment for it? What are the social implications of precocious puberty? The age of youngest mother is 5 years, how can a 5 year kid deliver a baby?

Let me try to address all the above questions along with the care for children with precocious puberty in my next article, which will be a continuation of this one….
