How to Get Rid of Head Lice
Take care of pesky head lice.
The new school year is under way and already I’m sure a lot of parents have had to deal with colds, strep throat, stomach bug and the host of other viruses and ailments that always seem to pop up with stunning regularity each school year.
As a parent, I’ve become used to all this but this year my kids have been hit with an all new problem; head lice. There is no easy way to get rid of these little pests and it takes a fair amount of time and effort on the part of the parents to deal with them. Here is the schedule that I followed which worked really well.
- Day 1: Treat the hair with an over the counter lice medication like “Nix” or something similar and then coat the hair with baby or corn oil (this gives the lice the impression that the hair is greasy and dirty which they do not like) and wrap the head in a towel or bandanna and leave it cover for at least 8 hours. I applied the baby oil before bed so that they had it on through the night and didn’t have to go to school all oiled up. You should also pick up a nit comb and regularly comb the hair to remove all lice and eggs.
- Day 2: Oil treatment.
- Day 3-4: Check for lice or new nits.
- Day 5: Oil treatment.
- Day 6-8: Check for lice or new nits.
- Day 9: Oil treatment.
- Day 10-12: Check for lice or new nits.
- Day 13: Oil treatment.
- Day 14-16: Check for lice or new nits.
- Day 17: Oil treatment.
- Day 18-20: Check for lice or new nits.
- Day 21: Oil treatment.
I found that everything had cleared up by the 3rd oil treatment but make sure to complete the full schedule because if you miss one or 2 eggs and they hatch into lice you are going to have to start from scratch all over again.
Over and above the treatments, you may want to put all the kids’ bed linens through the laundry using very hot water as well as all their stuffed animals. It’s a real pain but you can’t be too careful.
Like I said, it’s a fair amount of work but it will help get rid of them real quick and will also prevent the lice from spreading to other family members.
