Infant Illness Checklist
How can a parent know if they need to get their infant to the hospital?
Medical experts have created a simple checklist for parents to use in order to identify severe illnesses in infants that would require immediate treatment in a hospital.
The seven signs are:
- Difficulty eating
- Convulsions
- Movement only when stimulated
- Breathing rate of 60 breaths per minute or more
- Severe chest in drawing
- Over 37.5 degrees Celsius
- Under 35.5 Celsius
It is important to note that parents should not wait for more then one of these signs to appear before getting their infant to the emergency room. Time is of the utmost importance when it comes to getting a child to the hospital. A parent’s first line of defense is as simple as a gut feeling that something wrong. New parents are sometimes worried that they are over reacting; when it comes to the health of a child, there is no such thing.
Keep this checklist in mind and if a infant shows any of them, get them to a hospital.
