New Drugs for Night Time

I have recently been to many meetings to find out about different drugs for special needs children, for night time. My son is 16 and as you can imagine from other articles I have written it is very difficult to keep him dry and not have him with sores through the day, let alone at night, so in desperation after several meetings we came up with a melt on the tongue drug called ‘dessmemelton’ which as I said melts on the tongue so no holding the mouth open and going through painful manoeuvres’ this is given before he goes to bed about an hour or so before, then he is not allowed to drink after 8 oclockeither as this can affect the drug’s use in his body and become useless.
The first night there didn’t seem to be any affect on him he was still wet in the morning, disappointed as I was I persevered for another three nights when one morning he woke up and was not completely dry but so much better.
I got in touch with the paediatrician who said because of his age he may need double the amount. So that night same routine we gave him two instead of one. The next morning he was dry, it may sound ridiculous but it was great no smelly urine bed no soaking nappy, it makes such a difference to you as a mother and to Stevie who poor thing as much as he doesn’t appear to find it uncomfortable must like this new dryness in the morning.
My point in all this apart from being extremely happy for Stevie is that yet again, if you don’t investigate yourself, no one will, it is and I think always will be a case of find out for yourselves. When do you ever see any break through for special needs children for, say new drugs or contraptions for them to use, it’s always for the people who can be independent themselves. Don’t get me wrong it fantastic what is thought of and new pioneering drugs but, it would be nice if some attention was payed to the other group of people who cannot do things for themselves. We are lucky that people around us are always looking for new ideas, etc for Stevie, many times friends will say “I’ve just been on the internet and seen……” but there are millions who don’t have this. Who just rely on what the state give them which is not much.
