ADD and ADHD
About Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder.
We’ve all heard of this condition but do we really know what it is, and what it means? It’s fairly simple; ADD is a condition in which a person cannot concentrate, they’re distracted easily and focus mainly on interesting and stimulating things.
A person with ADD would rather run around and play sports and games rather than sit in a class and study, why? Basically the brain produces neurotransmitters such as Dopamine, this hormone stimulates the brain and people with ADD do not produce enough of this specific neurotransmitter, therefore they need physical stimulation in order to properly arouse their brain.
In order to do this the person may become distracted with something physically stimulating such as physical activity and sitting in class learning or studying is not stimulating enough, this is why these people can’t concentrate and focus on learning, or doing slothful things.
This condition is treatable mostly with stimulating medications such as Ritalin, Dexedrine, metadata or focalin, as well as many others. Some side effects of these drugs include decreased appetite, sleep difficulty or headaches. Some non-stimulating drugs are used as well in case the stimulants either don’t work or have strong side effects; the main medication use in these cases is atomexetine.
Atomexetine is classified as a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor; some side effects of this particular drug include decreased appetite, dizziness, dry mouth, fatigue, etc. This drug doesn’t work as fast as stimulants and it must be taken daily whereas stimulants can sometimes be skipped.
Counselling and family therapy can greatly yelp people with this condition and support from others is essential. I hope this gave you a little more knowledge about people with this condition, go use that knowledge to help someone you know feel better about their ADD or ADHD.
