Allergies and Your Life
Allergies affect one of every five people in the United States alone. Allergies can simply be defined as abnormal reactions to external substances.
When you have an allergy to a certain substance your body mistakingly identifies that allergen as something harmful to your system. Subsequently it then triggers your immune system to release what are known as histamines, that attempt to fight off the allergen, but end up attaching themselves to things like your blood cells that end up causing you to have allergic reactions.
There are four main types of allergies, of which include: airborne, asthma, food, and skin. The most common allergies are from pollen and dust, but all kinds of foods and environments can trigger a reaction in specific people. The reactions usually caused are not deadly, but can be very bothersome to health and put a crutch on your life.
Symptoms
Depending on the the type of allergy and severity, symptoms can include: sneezing and runny nose, itching, swelling, rashes and asthmatic reactions. Depending on the person, reactions can be delayed or immediate. Reactions can correlate with the amount of allergen taken in, but also can again depend on the person being affected whether a minute amount of allergen or large amount of allergen will cause a reaction.
Prevention
Probably the easiest way to prevent allergies is to stay away from them. If you are allergic to a certain food of course stay away from that food. If you are allergic to pollen stay away from the place where you will be at risk. If you get an allergic reaction to dust, keep your home clean. The basic goal is to try to take away the environmental exposure which causes the reaction in the first place. I know not everyone can eliminate completely these these risk factors from their life, but doing the best we can along with medication is the best thing you can do.
Causes
The cause of allergies is an inherited genetic defect. This defect causes a hypersensitivity to certain things that would to most other people not have such an effect. The body will confuse an allergen with a harm causing intruder and then deploy a high level attack to remove it. This attack is what causes you to have the side effects that can be so irritating.
Treatments
The best way to treat allergies is to prevent them in the first place, but since this isn’t always possible, there are medications and nasal sprays to help relieve the symptoms of allergies, and for certain allergies there is a shot you can get to help you every few days. Of course nothing is perfect, so it is true that the medications can have a few of their own side effects like drowsiness, fatigue, and high blood pressure. For this reason, medication should only be taken if you cannot eliminate the allergens from your environment in the first place or following unexpected exposure.
Medications
Antihistamines are the most widely used treatment for allergies. They work by blocking the histamine that is produced by your body and that would otherwise try to fight the allergens causing unwanted side effects in the process.
Decongestants are used to treat congestion that can be caused from potential allergens. This congestion is caused by the symptom of swelling, which in turn effects the nasal tissue, causing this mucusy congestion in the nasal cavity and chest. The idea behind decongestants is to target the swelling symptom in an effect to return the nasal tissue back to its normal size.
Corticosteroids is a third type of medication to treat allergies. Corticosteroids are deflammatory medications. They can be used to treat symptoms like stuffy nose, itchiness, and swelling.
Bronchodilators are medications we normally associate with inhalers used for asthma symptoms. They work by relaxing the muscles involved with getting airflow through for breathing.
