Am I Getting Enough Calcium?
Both men and women need to monitor their calcium intake. How do you know if you are getting enough? Too much or too little can harm you.
Calcium is an agent that helps regulate your heartbeat, contract muscles, transmit nerve impulses and form bone. If you have too much calcium it can cause health issues just as taking too little can cause different problems.
If you have too little calcium you will probably show symptoms such as twitching, muscles spasms or cramps. You may get numbness in your feet, hands arms and legs. You could actually have a seizure. You may have an irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure.
Taking too much calcium can cause you to lose your appetite. It can cause you to vomit or have diarrhea. You could also have a seizure if your calcium is too high. High calcium intake can lead to depression, confusion and delirium. You could be lethargic if your intake is in excess. You may also be dehydrated and thirsty, have an irregular heartbeat, and low blood pressure.
Low calicum may be cause from kidney failure, pancreatitis, decreased blood levels of magnesium, and inadequate dietary intake of calcium and vitamin D. Severe burns or infections may also cause your levels to be too low. If your parathyroid glands are underactive this could cause low calcium levels.
You can have too much calcium if you have tumors that destroy bones, multiple fractures, and overactive parathyroid glands.
You should avoid alcohol consumption. Calcium channel blockers can increase your risk of calcium imbalance. Eating too many products that contain calcium can cause imbalance as well.
Always eat a well balanced diet to prevent this from happening. Don’t use any antacids on a regular basis. The possible complications that can come of this are cardiac arrest, fractures, kidney stones, and ulcers. Calcium imbalance can usually be regulated within one week under a doctor’s care.
