Apnea Sleep Disorders

A large number of people suffer with one of the many sleep disorders. It is wise to know about sleep apnea for to ignore it may cause serious and life threatening illness.

A large number of the population suffers from sleep disorders. There are many disorders to disrupt our nightly quest for a restful sleep. The effect of sleep deprivation will leave us in a poor condition to face the daily tasks since the head seems light and concentration becomes an effort. The brain is unable to function properly when there has not been sufficient rest night after night. Further as with sleep apnea interrupted nighttime breathing increases the risk of dying suddenly.

Sleep Apnea is a condition of interrupted nighttime breathing while sleeping and a pause may happen 10 or 20 times in one hour. Snoring and sleep apnea are caused by partial blockage of the airway during sleep. This causes tissues in the throat to vibrate. The most common is obstructive sleep apnea, unable to get enough air through the mouth and nose into the lungs. When that happens the amount of oxygen in the blood may drop; normal breathing may resume with a snort. Person may gasp loudly until oxygen levels return to normal. People who snore do not necessarily have sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea can cause stress and affect the health of the individual. Better sleep is related to successful aging good sleep is important for good health. The problems caused from lack o f sleep is linked with depressed mood; attention and memory problems as well as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Half of the people suffering with apnea have high blood pressure. These same people have been known to have 2 to 6 times more traffic accidents opposed toindividuals who do not have sleep apnia.They also have a higher risk for stroke and heart failure.

First step is to see your doctor and after an exam and or testing he will advise what is the best treatment. There are several ways to go. Wearing a mask or cpap ( continuous positive airway pressure) flows air into the nose to keep the airway from collapsing. Some doctors will give oral medication. It; is suggested to keep weight down, sleep on your side, not the back. And th ere is a special pillow to hold the mask in place. it runs about 70 dollars.

It is best too have the doctor determine if one has sleep apnea and what treatment is best.
