At Least You’ve Got Your Skin
I saw this story on TV one night and found it to be very inspiring and enlightening.
I was at work on Wednesday and it started out like any other day. I was in a good mood and we were watching the music man. I’m not going to disclose this particular person but he knows who he is and he made me really depressed. So to make myself feel better I took my sister out to dinner and then came home and watched some TV when I ran across something very interesting.
There was a 36 year old man who lived over in Britain. He suffered from a disease that made his skin constantly fall off. Any sort of friction on his skin and it would fall off and blister. This put him in constant pain and he developed skin cancer because of it. He never went through puberty and because of the scarring on his vocal cords, he had a very high voice, and tissue grew over his hands and feet, leaving only nubs. Whenever the dressings on his blisters were changed, they would end up pulling off more skin. Knowing that in 4 months he was going to die from the cancer, he wrote to this TV station and wanted them to document him in his last weeks as he prepared for his own funeral.
He was truly one of the most positive and inspiring people I’ve ever heard about. Just his attitude about the whole thing was very unreal. He didn’t feel sorry for himself or anything. Maybe all of us ungrateful people should just shut up about insignificant things and just be happy that our skin isn’t falling off.
