Blindness
General Information on Blindness.
Blindness is known as the inability to see any light at all, known as total blindness.
There are a number of visual impairments that are not as bad as total blindness. These visual impairments are classified into different categories. The impairments range from near normal vision to low vision and legally blind.
Legally blind is known as a government term and if diagnosed with this type of visual impairment, you qualify for a variety of different government aids and services. However being legally blind does come with its disadvantages such as not being able to drive
There are so many different causes of blindness. In general, any affect that causes the retina, the optic nerve or the visual centres and pathways of the brain can reduce vision. In severe cases, blindness may result.
There are many, many cateagories of conditions that impair vision include infections such as
- · Congenital rubella infection
- · Inflammations
- · Congenital or hereditary diseases
- · Retinitis pigmentosa
- · Tumours
- · Cataracts
- · Trauma or mechanical injury
- · Metabolic and nutritional disorders
- · Glaucoma
- · Vascular damage such as diabetic eye disease
There are also many lower vision impairments This type of visual impairment has no known cause. An example of this is aged –related macular degeneration.
