Canker Sores: Cause and Treatment
Some people get canker sores (mouth sores) more often than others. The sores can be painful and may take a long time to heal.
Canker sores are the result of eating food, such as a hot pizza, while the cheese melts their soft palate. It causes you to be cranky and irritable and keeps you from doing many things that make life worth living. It is also somewhat of a mystery.
No one knows why some people get canker sores and others don’t. There are certain habits that can be associated with canker sores, such as over-enthusiastic tooth brushing, hot and spicy food, heredity, as well as emotional stress. According to Robert Goepp, DDS, PhD., professor, University of Chicago Medical Center, to medicate a canker sore is difficult. The skin in your mouth is laden with bacteria. Study shows that the older you get, the less likely it is for you to get canker sores. However, there are some escape routes that may work which are as follows:
l) Carbonate peroxide: It is an over-the-counter medication, combining glycerin and peroxide. Its application help release oxygen and clear up the bacteria. The sore gets coated with glycerin, thus soothing the pain. The brand names are Gly oxide, Amosan and Cankard.
2) Potassium Chlorate: Put a teaspoon of potassium chlorate in a cup of water and rinse your mouth with it several times a day. Do not swallow. It is an old Midwest remedy which is also a somewhat weak antiseptic.
3) Canker sore medications containing benzocaine, menthol, camphor, eucalyptol and/or alcohol in a liquid or gel.
4) Pastes that form a protection “bandage” over the sore, such as Orabase.
5) Wet tea bag, particularly black tea containing tannin, an astringent that can relieve pain.
6) Wash your mouth with one tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide in a glass of water. Swish it around your mouth in order to disinfect the sore. This helps speed healing.
7) Dab alum on the sore. It is an antiseptic and pain reliever.
8) Swish Mylanta around your mouth. It protects and coats the sore. Do not swallow.
9) Eat four tablespoons of unflavored yogurt. It prevents canker sores.
10) Squeeze vitamin E oil from a capsule onto your canker sore. Repeat several times a day to keep the tissue well-oiled.

I have just been looking looking up to see if mouth ulcers are the same as canker sores and it appears that they are. We all seem to suffer from these at times, so thank you for the treatment tips.
