Level of Knowledge on Diabetes Among Type II Diabetic Patients in Dagupan City
The study was designed to measure the level of knowledge of diabetic patients in Dagupan City. The study involved five main phases such as the preliminary study; the preparation of the instrument for data gathering; presentation, analysis and interpretation of data; and final report. There were a total of 50 Type II diabetic patients gathered as the respondents of the study from 4 barangays in Dagupan City: 12 from Malued, 18 from Brgy. Pogo Chico, 8 from Bonifacio Street and 12 from Herrero Street. The study was conducted from January 2005 to April 2005 from the survey up to the analyzation and tabulation of data.
The level of knowledge among diabetic patients in Dagupan City on signs and symptoms resulted to a total weighted mean (TWM) of 2.20 with a descriptive rating of high level of knowledge. The level of understanding on management and treatment among diabetic patients in Dagupan City resulted to a TWM of 2.15 with a descriptive rating of high level of knowledge.
When their level of knowledge on signs and symptoms is classified according to the age of the respondents it has a TWM of 2.26 or with a descriptive rating of high level of knowledge. When classified under gender it has a TWM of 2.22 having a descriptive rating of high level of knowledge. And, under educational attainment it resulted to a TWM of 2.47 with a descriptive rating of high level of knowledge. On their knowledge regarding management and treatment of the disease classified as to age it has a TWM of 2.26 with a descriptive rating of high level of knowledge. Under gender, it has TWM of 2.32 with a descriptive rating of high level of knowledge, and under educational attainment resulted to TWM of 2.52 with a descriptive rating of high level of knowledge.
Further analysis shows that there is no significant relation on the level of knowledge among diabetic patients on signs and symptoms and management and treatment of the disease according to the patient’s age and gender. However, the patients educational attainment has found to have significant relationship on their level of knowledge about the disease.
The researchers therefore conclude that the diabetic patients in the four barangay of Dagupan City, had high level of knowledge in monitoring the signs and symptoms and the proper management and treatment for the disease.
Since the patients are highly knowledgeable on the signs and symptoms and management and treatment, the researchers recommend that nurses should advice on the strict compliance of the medication and treatment.
