Do Your Dentures Go Clackety-Clack?

Periodontal disease is more common than ever, and dentures are often the solution to remedy the aesthetics of your mouth. Luckily dentures have improved over the years, making the transition easy.

Attractive, Precise-Fitting Dentures Can Be Yours!

According to the dental profession, nearly 90 percent of our population has some form of periodontal disease. This painful condition causes tooth loss, and to make matters worse, it’s almost always caused by poor oral hygiene (read: it’s preventable!) If your dentist suggests dentures in order to maintain your quality of life, by all means be sure to arrange for a proper fit. After all, they’ll be replacing your teeth, which you’ve grown accustomed to enjoying on a daily basis.

Take, for example, my Uncle Bunk’s ill-fitting dentures– they were a source of amusement at our grandmother’s dinner table for years. He would try to bite into a cob of corn and his teeth would come out, like a cartoon, still dangling from the cob. His dentures would clack when he spoke or ate and he couldn’t say his “S’s” correctly. Why would he subject himself to so much discomfort? He didn’t want to spend the time and money to be properly fitted. Though I wouldn’t expect him to upgrade because of vanity reasons — he was way beyond that – but I would think that after some time, he would search for a more comfortable solution.

Properly fitted dentures are very hard to detect, especially with today’s technology. Your dentist’s precision and care can prevent the above scenarios from happening by taking measurements and making models of your jaw during a preliminary visit. Then the complete dentures are inserted immediately after the removal of the remaining teeth. Though some discomfort is normal as you adjust, before long, you’ll be eating and speaking without a mishap. Plus, most people find that their dentures look way better than their original teeth ever did!
