Dizziness affects many people. This article will tell you eight simple ways to get rid of dizziness.
Dizziness is a common complaint with many people. Dizziness can be a symptom of many physical illnesses or experiences so it’s important to know why you’re feeling dizzy. Did you get up too quickly? Did you eat anything that day? Is it your medication? These simple questions can help you figure out what could be causing your dizziness. Here are some symptoms of dizziness:
- You feel like the room is spinning
- You can’t control your balance
- You feel lightheaded
- Feeling weak, faint, fatigued, or just unsteady
- Blurred vision after certain movement
- Having difficulty concentrating
Now that you know the symptoms, here are some simple ways to get rid of dizziness:
- Move slowly and focus on something
When you start feeling dizzy, you should sit, lie down or stand still. You should focus on something in the room. I try to focus on a picture on my wall. Focusing on something still can counteract some of the symptoms of dizziness. If you move too fast, it can cause a drop in blood pressure that causes dizziness. Continue to move slowly until you feel steady on your feet.
- Check your medication
One of the side effects to your medication could be dizziness. You might have to talk to your doctor about changing the dosage of your medication. Your pharmacist may have given you a generic version of your medication. This situation happened to my mother. She got dizzy from the generic version of the medication she was taking. She had to get the brand name medication because of the dizziness that came with generic brand.
- Change your diet
Changing your diet can reduce dizziness. Caffeine, alcohol, and tobacco can contribute to dizziness. Artificial sweeteners and highly sweet or salty foods can also affect your body’s ability to balance if you get dizzy a lot. Cutting back on this stuff can reduce your dizziness and improve your overall health.
- Drink more water
Dehydration is one of the main causes for dizziness. This happens most of the time during exercise and hot weather. Make sure to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. If you work outside, you should drink more water. You should always keep a bottle of water with you at all times.
- Practice deliberate movements
You should stand and walk slowly in straight lines using a can or a stick to steady yourself. I don’t have a can so I would use a stick or a big umbrella.
- Exercise to build focal strength
You can strengthen your visual focus by tracking moving objects (like your hand or passing traffic) with your eyes while sitting or standing. You can also focus on a still object while surrounded by moving objects. Try sitting or standing with your eyes closed. Practice walking by placing one foot directly in front of the other or walking on uneven surfaces (like up and down a hill). This sounds like the easiest exercises to me. It’s much better than the other vigorous exercises that are needed to keep you in shape. LOL!
- Avoid activities that cause dizziness
You should avoid doing heavy exercises in hot weather. You should also avoid rapidly moving rides or rollercoasters. I have to avoid rides like these because they make me dizzy. I used to be able to get on these rides, but once I got older, I had to avoid them because they made me dizzy and nauseated.
- See a doctor if you keep feeling dizzy
If your symptoms from dizziness aren’t going away, you should see a doctor. There could be something seriously wrong with you. If you experience loss of consciousness, difficulty walking, weakness in legs or arms, difficulty speaking, hearing etc., you should see a doctor immediately.
These are all the simple ways to get rid of dizziness. If you experience short-term dizziness, hopefully these tips will help you get rid of it.
