Exelon Patch for Alzheimers

If a loved one, or even you, have dementia associated with alzheimers, read this before taking the exelon patch. As always, check with your doctor before taking this medicine.

A little while ago, the FDA approved a new form of medicine for Alzheimer’s called the Exelon Patch. This new medicine is a trans-dermal patch.  The patch is good for people who can’t remember to take a pill twice a day. It causes a constant dose of medicine.  This medicine can also be used by people with Parkinson’s related dementia.

Another good advantage to using the patch is it goes through your skin  directly into your blood stream. For some taking certain pills upset their stomach or cause them to bleed gastrointestinal. So, going into your bloodstream and not going through your digestive tract.

Some side effects are skin irritation where you put on the patch.  Use caution when applying these patches. Do not put the patch on the same places. Put a patch on different spots of your body. You can put a patch in one spot every 14 days.

The patch can be put on any time of day, don’t worry about whether you have to eat as this can be taken on an empty or full stomach.

In case you were wondering what the patch is made up of, I’ll give a brief description.

The first layer is called the shell.  The second layer  contains the medicine. The third layer is the adhesive, bathing and showing should not affect the patch. The fourth layer is the release liner which is removed when you take off the patch.

This patch should not be given in accordance with cholinomimetic agents which are almost alike when it comes to how it affects the body and brain.  Also, do not take with anticholinergic medicines.

Please inform your doctor of all the medicines you are taking whether they are prescription or over the counter.

I hope nobody who reads this ever have to use this medicine or have a loved one that has to take it.  I hope I helped explain this patch so you will be informed about it.
