Some of you may already know the health benefits of onion. Nevertheless, here is a compilation of some dangerous diseases that the humble onion can cure:

#1 Anemia: As onions are rich in iron content, they are said to be useful in treatment of anemia. To improve the blood count, one can consider eating onion with jaggery.

#2 Heart Diseases: To prevent heart diseases, eat a raw onion daily. Onions are believed to contain flavonoids – which are known to provide protection against cardiovascular disease. The flavonoid called quercetin lowers the amount of inflammation in arteries. Onions are known for their anti-coagulant properties, and are useful as they possess natural anti clotting agents.

#3 Diabetes: Onions contain the mineral chromium, which is said to be essential to glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Onions are also effective against diabetes as they contain allyl propyl disulphide and diallyl disulphide oxide – ingredients that can lower blood sugar.

#4 Cancer: Onions contain quercetin, an anti-oxidant that has been proven to combat cancers of the mouth, throat and kidneys. Onions also contain pigenin – which contains anti-carcinogenic properties. In addition, onions contain Apigenin – which is believed to demonstrate chemopreventive properties, with the ability to prevent tumor and cancer cell growth.

#5 Osteoporosis:  Onions are good for the bones, as they contain a compound that decreases bone loss and osteoporosis. The compound called GPCS prevents bone loss.
