Five Ways to Care for Your Heart
Never put off caring for your heart. The right time is now. Ditching the saturated fats and highly salted foods are not enough when it comes to keeping your heart healthy. Omissions are just one part of the puzzle to a better, healthier lifestyle. Below are some of the things we must do in order to create the perfect balance that’s good for your heart.
Diet
- Potassium in bananas are perfect for keeping the blood pressure at a healthy level. Tuck into bananas not just for a filling snack, but for the sake of your blood pressure.
- Omega 3s are vital in maintaining good cholesterol levels. Eat at least one serving of fish every week. Why not make a tuna sandwich for lunch one day a week to add an easy second helping of fish to your diet.
- Lycopene is a substance we need to maintain the healthy working of our heart. High levels of lycopene is found in the simple tomato. Add some tinned tomatoes to your stews and curries several times a week, and you’ll reap the benefits.
Lifestyle
Articles about smoking have been done to death, so I’m not going to do one here. A large percentage of heart attacks and heart diseases are due to smoking. This tells us that we can cut our chances of developing heart troubles if we do not smoke.
Keep active
- If you have kids, take this opportunity to spend active time with them. Instead of watching a film together, go for a bike ride or a kick-about (ball game) outdoors. Indoor activity centres like swimming pools and local leisure centres are perfect choices for when the weather gets colder.
- Walking the dog is a steady and enjoyable way of keeping fit. Walking is a great way of looking after the health of your heart because it keeps the blood pumping and the extra weight at bay. In cold seasons the body loses weight merely by working to keep warm. So the early morning walk with your favourite friend serves two purposes!
- Limit the time you and your kids spend in front of the TV. You’re cultivating an unhealthy future for your kids if you allow them to spend unlimited time sitting in front of the TV, computer, game boys etc. Teach by example, how they could take care of their hearts’ health.
Be happy
- Make a list of everything you must get done today. Set priorities right so that you’re not stressed at the end of the day (doing unnecessary chores) having left yourself little time to compete the things that really matter.
- There’s enough time in the day to take some ‘me-time’ no matter how busy you are. Remember you’re only as busy as you let yourself become. Turn off the mobile phone, they survived without you when they couldn’t contact you 24-7. They can survive without you for 30 minutes.
- Take your time to eat and relax. Don’t gobble down fast food. Face it, you only pretend you haven’t got enough time for lunch. No one – no one is that important. If you think you are, you’re deluding yourself. The problem could be improper time management on your behalf, not being too busy.
- Have close contact with the people you love. A hug will go a long way. Take one minute to do so. Contact like this with loved ones reduces stress and induces happiness and self-satisfaction. These have positive, not negative effects on your heart.

Good advice, I try and eat healthily and I usually walk to work (accept when the weather is terrible) Most difficult I find is relaxing, I think I could do with a few more hugs as well . Great article very informative.
