Flu and You

Protect yourself and the ones you love with simple daily actions.

People are more concerned than ever about keeping themselves and families safe from illness.  The Center for Disease control and Prevention said some vaccines for H1N1 flu will be out in the fall, most likely they will be given to ‘high-risk’ groups: school-age children, pregnant women, health workers and those with risky conditions such as asthma.

While there is not a vaccine for every cold and flu, there are steps you can take to protect against illness.

  • Cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough, using a tissue if possible. Throw away the tissue after you use it. No tissue? Sneeze or cough into the crook of your arm instead of your hands.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water for 15-20 seconds. A good rule, especially with children, sing ‘happy birthday to you’ while washing. No soap and water? Hand sanitizer with alcohol is effective.
  • Whenever possible, stay away from anyone who is sick.
  • Stay home and keep children home if you are sick.
  • Watch for public health alerts.
  • Be aware of school closures.
  • Avoid crowds when possible.
  • Keep an emergency kit with tissues, hand wipes, medications and any other items you and your family use. This will help limit you need to go in public for supplies while you or others are sick.

While we can’t compeletly eliminate sickness, we can help stop the spread by using simple precautions.
