Hammertoe is a condition that causes one or more of your toes to become permanently bent at the toe joint into the shape similar to upside down V. Along with the permanent bending of the toe(s), swelling of the toes, foot pain and corns also occur.

Hammertoe is often times an inherited trait, but most often caused by wearing improper shoes. The popular summertime foot wear of flip-flops are a major contributing factor to someone developing hammertoes. Flip-flops provide no support to the foot and you to unconsciously bend your toes to grab the shoe bed for balance each time you take a step. The more you walk in flip-flops, the higher the risk you have for developing hammertoes. The upside down V shape that your toes must contort to so you can walk in flip-flops will begin to be the permanent shape of your toes and you will be unable to straighten your toes out.

Wearing shoes with heels above two inches high also contribute to the cause of foot pain brought on by developing hammertoes.

There is only one cure for hammertoes once you have them, surgery. Surgical straightening of the bent toes is the cure. Treatment for hammer toes to ease the pain and prevent the toes from bending any more include wearing low heeled, supportive shoes, ice packs applied to the hammertoes, over-the-counter corn treatment or having your doctor shave the corns down to make walking more comfortable.
