Fundoplication, Surgery to Relieve Gerd, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Fundoplication surgery to relieve GERD explained.
For some GERD sufferers, all the traditional and time honored relief strategies don’t work. If you have tried all the home remedies, followed your doctor’s advice and faithfully take your prescription medications yet still suffer from GERD symptoms, Fundoplication may be the answer for you.
Fundoplication is the most common surgical procedure used to treat GERD. During Fundoplication surgery, the upper part of the stomach, called the fundus, is wrapped around the base of the esophagus and sewn into place with surgical sutures. Fundoplication surgery tightens the opening between the esophagus and the stomach, making it difficult for stomach acid and food to reflux into the esophagus.
Most GERD sufferers who have undergone Fundoplication surgery have had a dramatic improvement in their GERD symptoms. While most have dramatic improvement, sometimes the GERD symptoms are not totally eradicated and the patient must still take medication to keep GERD symptoms under control.
Occasionally, Fundoplication surgery results in the opening between the esophagus and stomach being to tight, making it difficult for the patient to swallow. However if this does occur, it can be surgically corrected.
If you have tried prescription medications, watched the types of foods you eat and the times of day you eat, lost weight, raised the head of your bed and other home remedies from A-Z to get relief from GERD, but still suffer the acid reflux, discuss Fundoplication surgery with your doctor.
