Have You Had Food Poisoning?

Ok, you survive a nasty stomach problem and then live on a few years. That newest problem could be the result of when you had food poisoning.

E Coli and other food borne illnesses from Shigella and Salmonella are never enjoyable and now you need to know that any physical problems could be waiting to happen to you. It can take months or years before high blood pressure, kidney damage or failure and reactionary arthritis take their toll on you.

Scientists have only recently been studying the effects of what flu can do and how bacterial and other infections impact the human body in the long term. They have found a paralysis from campylobacter which causes diarrhea and is found in raw chicken. It is also the most common bacterial problem in our food. Guillain Barre Syndrome can strike in about a month from infection of campylobacter. Your nerves are attacked and you end up in intensive care.

There are 76 million annual food poisonings documented and one can wonder how many are unreported. The effects mentioned appear to be a small part of that figure however this as mentioned has only been recently started to be studied.

Diabetes has even been attributed to an inflamed pancreas from food poisoning. A toddler unfortunately ended up on dialysis and subsequently had learning problems attributed to food poisoning.

One child from the Jack in the Box days of tainted meat was hospitalized from E Coli and though successfully treated and doing well in college has been found to have odd maladies for her age. She had been diagnosed with high blood pressure, colon inflammation that requires a hospital visit, thyroid removal, endometriosis and a hiatal hernia. Not all may be from the E Coli attack however surely a concerning situation, an expensive one at that.

We have the CDC and they track reported cases of food borne illness and there were over 300,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths.

The University of Utah has performed a long study and found a percentage of E Coli cases developing HUS – hemolytic uremic syndrome where organs fail and most often the kidneys.

Salmonella has been linked to reactive arthritis occurring in about 6 months of exposure. , from joint pain to eye inflammation and occasionally painful urination and resulting chronic arthritis.

Though considered more from outside the U.S. Shigella and Yersinia entercolitica can occur in America especially with many of us traveling. Shigella has been found I daycare centers. Shigella and Yersinia can both trigger reactive arthritis.

Hopefully you have never had any form of food poisoning. It is hoped though that you have more of an idea from this article of things to be concerned about and what help to ask for if you have had food poisoning.
