Yasthimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra), also known as licorice is a widely used herb in various Ayurvedic medications. It is used mainly in Ayurveda as a rejuvenating herb and as a immune booster. Now, recent research have established its numerous health benefits.
New studies at Harvard medical School have revealed that certain compounds found in yashtimadhu, known as Triterpenoids, may help in retarding the growth of cancerous cells and may also cause certain precancerous cells to return to normal.
Yashtimadhu helps in suppressing coughs by soothing irritated throats due to its anaesthetising effect. It is an integral constituent of Ayurvedic medicines used for treating allergic coughs.
Recent studies have shown that yashtimadhu is a natural antacid, and can greatly benefit those suffering from ulcers. The compounds in yashtimadu helps in reducing the secretion of acids in the stomach, stimulates mucus secretion and helps stomach cells repair themselves.
Another study has found that Glycyrrhizin, an active compound found in yashtimadhu may also help in preventing dental caries as it can inhibit formation of dental plaque.
Glycyrrhizin is also responsible for the immune boosting properties of yashtimadhu. Glycyrrhizin is also known for its potent anti-viral activity, hence it may be beneficial to those suffering from AIDS and other viral diseases such as Herpes. At the same time, recent studies have shown that over-consumption of glycyrrhizin can cause toxicity and have adverse effects like high blood pressure, kidney and liver damage.
Another research has found that regular consumption of yashtimadhu may help in preventing heart disease, especially Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), since consumption of about 100 mg of yashtimadhu root powder daily can help in prevention of oxidation of bad cholesterol (LDL), which is one of the main causes of plaque formation.
